Why are some people obsessed with these pistols ? I want to buy one( I think ).So can someone please tell me the advantages to owning one. What's the attraction ? They seem big and bulky and only hold mags of 8.

Proven design, many options after market. 100 year history and was the US military sidearm for much of its life. 45ACP is also proven defense caliber

For me the most comfortable pistol to shoot (out of all that I have shot... there may be more that feel better that I have not tried yet). Very accurate. Great history. Reliable. And just plain nice to look at.
Once you get one you will probably like it too.

Also, they are not big and bulky. At least not for my hands. And my hands aren't very big.

Can I get decent concealed holster ? I realize they are not the ideal concealed firearm. Or is this just a range/nightstand gun?

They make TONS of concealed holsters for 1911's. If you plan to use it for carry I would go with one of the more compact models and not the full size goverment.

"the advantages to owning one. What's the attraction"
There is absolutely no advantage to owning one from a combat or self defense standpoint.
The attraction, they are a part of American history as is the 1873 Colt and command respect as such. They are a Mr. Potato Head gun like the AR and appeal to folks who like Erector sets, Lincoln Logs, and Lego's too.

Thanks for clearing that up. So I don't really need one, but if I carried one in the USMC 31 yrs.ago, it would be a nostalgic purchase. I do like Lincoln Logs.

"need" I'm not touchin that. You didn’t have to carry it to appreciate one. I think everyone should own one.

I guess I'm a little hesitant because I own 3 45's already. But I like the look of them. Slimmer than my Glock.

I think they are much more comfortable than a Glock. But I would have to say that a Glock is probably more reliable (in comparison to my Spartan... which I have had FTFeed problems with).

"the advantages to owning one. What's the attraction"
There is absolutely no advantage to owning one from a combat or self defense standpoint. Absolutely none? That's interesting. Why not? I know competitions are not exactly "combat or self defense," but in the USPSA's "combat-style" matches, the 1911 clearly dominates, by a huge margin. They had to create a completely separate category for folks with Glocks, Berettas, and the other safe-action/double action pistols, so they'd have a division in which they could be competitive. The attraction, they are a part of American history as is the 1873 Colt and command respect as such. They are a Mr. Potato Head gun like the AR and appeal to folks who like Erector sets, Lincoln Logs, and Lego's too. So, the attraction is historical? What about the facts that they're more accurate, point better, have better ergonomics, and are, simply, a better overall design? DAO's and Safe Actions are the result of lawyers and bean counters who believe a 10 pound trigger pull creates less potential liability. But, on the last part, you're right... like all the "toys" you mention, they are fun to add stuff to... Alpha: They make "double-stacks" so you're not limited to 8 round 1911's any more. My pistols hold 17 rounds of .45 acp...

there's a reason troops that can choose what pistol to carry (special forces like Delta Force, SEALS) prefer 1911s, the troops that dont have that option are stuck with 9mm Berrettas. same reason the M-14 has come out of the storeage and scrounged up from wherever they were, cause it is so much bettter than the anemic 5.56 at effectiveness in places like Afghanistan. I carried a 1911 39 years ago, also luck enough to carry a M14 now and then. they are both proven.

Yep. 1911's and M14's have clear advantages. I know I've only got competition experience as opposed to the real thing, but, that's why in 3-gun matches, my son gets the S&W 559 and the AR15, and I use a P14-45 and an M1A. That way, the kid can't beat his old man. :grin Better sights on the M1A. If the shots are all 100 yards or less, the AR gets a bit of an edge, because it's a bit easier to change mags, and the accuracy edge becomes less noticeable for the M1A.

What a wide range of opinions. So the SEAL's Are carrying 1911's now? Have you ever humped a can of 45 for days on end? You guys better not look for the 5.56 to go away in your lifetime. You guys that like locked-n-cocked would be the first to bitch if someone got into the car with your grandkids with his Marlin 30-30 in the same carry mode. What portion of the Sig 226 is for lawyers?

Your M1a is more accurate than your AR15?

Your M1a is more accurate than your AR15? Like I said, better sights on the M1A. NM vs. shortly post ban Colt HBAR Sporter Target Model with no mods. We shoot in limited class, so no optics allowed.

Special Ops carry the pistol of their choosing and most prefer the .45 for obvious reasons, and yes I have carried lots of ammo cans of .45 and .308 in the field in 100% humidity and I was glad I had the firepower, in todays battlefield with easier ways to resupply ammo to the troops, I see no reason to use the M14 more, as well as the .45, you dont need many second shots with these calibers. I know from experience.
