Had been hunting with 30.06 for 30 years. Bought a Stevens .270 last year and won't go back. I also bought a 7mm.08 3 months ago that I like too.

Of the two you asked about I like, and have used,.25-06 up to elk. Once you get into moose and large bear there's no sense in messing around, .338 of some sort.

Is it your only rifle? It depends what you already own. How recoil sensitive are you? Do you have the possibility of hunting anything larger than deer & hogs? Are you hunting or simply punching paper? These are the questions I would be asking myself. The 270 is hard to beat for an all around Texas hunting rifle.

I have a 25.06 and I like it! Also have several other rifles in various .30 cal so I probably won't buy a 270 unless I just get the virus again. Having said that - I will assume you are going to have JUST one choice. It really doesn't matter what I like it's between your choices. If that's the case I'd just have to go with the .270.

Reason: (1) Sooner or later you're gonna want to hunt somewhere besides Texas for bigger animals and the .270 will get you to anything short of a BIG bear - and even that in an emergency. (2) Lots of factory bullet/ammo choices for those that don't handload. (3) If you do handload the choices get better. (4) In most every state - .270 is on the shelf at every gas station, convenience store, wal-mart, and hardware store you can find.

Now that we got the important stuff out of the way......As most people on here will testify to (if the have read any of my comparison posts), I'm always looking for an excuse to buy something else....so, as previously mentioned, just get one of each. Bottom line - "Its your money"

I own both. Either will work just fine in Texas. If I lived in the mountain states, it would be the .270 hands down.

Recently was pig hunting with a person that had a 25-06.

His scope took a vacation, so ultimately we changed his scope out. By the time he sorted out his scope situation he needed more ammo.

We visited some towns in South Texas including a gun store, two Walmarts, and an Academy, as well as some likely looking gas stations before finally finding a single choice for 25-06 at a gun store in Corpus.

Every store and some gas stations had 223, 270, 308 and most had 243. 30-06 was not common. So between the 25-06 and 270, I'd suggest the 270, but I would go with a 308 over either.

i wonder how many folks who use the "big enough for anything in north america"reasoning actually shoot anything other than whitetail or the odd exotic

Given one of those two choices, I'll pick the 270. All the reasons mentioned above. As far as the 308 is concerned, it's hard to knock a caliber that snipers use for consistant 1000 yard shots on non-paper 200ish pound targets!!! JMO

I would add that there are some choices (more than most) in OEM scope reticles that assist in .308 ballistics holdover.
Also when shooting through light brush, a bigger bullet is not a bad thing.

I was choosing between .270 and 30-06, and leaning towards the .270 when I chose .308 instead.

I made the decision after shooting the .270 and finding I did not like the muzzle jump at all. You should shoot the 25-06 and the .270 before you buy either.
