Hi everyone or I should say Darz bor - traditional Polish hunting greeting.

Have you ever wondered and thought about the language that you use during the hunting? Is it different from the common type that you use at work? How does it look like in different parts of the world? This is what I am dealing with smile

My name is Marek and I am a hunter in Poland for 6 years now (in Poland it is illegal to hunt before 18) and a student of English.

I am working on my MA thesis that concerns the hunting language. The work is based on a comparison of English speaking type of language that is used among hunters with its Polish equivalent. In order to show the difference the best way is to compare it in the survey. And this is what i am asking for.

If you are not in a hurry and do have 5 minutes to answer 25 questions to ma MA survey please go to:

http://www.ankietka.pl/ankieta/53380/sur...g-language.html

I guarantee that it is a safe webpage. It does not require any information about you and you can leave it anytime. The survey is posted on Polish server and in order to sent the results just click the blue "WYSLIJ" button at the bottom.

If you are interested in European hunting culture and how we do it in Poland you can get a contact with me by email: indyanah@wp.pl smile Here are some photos from my hunting 'career' http://media.lowiecki.pl/zdjecia/opis.php?p=5972

Have you got any thoughts about the language that we use and how it is perceived by non-hunters?

Thank you smile

Take care and Darz bor!

P.S. This is my first post here so please forgive me if i start the topic in a wrong place.

Took the survey as best as possible. I'm not sure your questions and language translate well here.

Good luck on that - I know just how hard it is to get people to do surveys. I've answered it - hope it helps.

Answered the survey.. and got me thinking. We do have a language all to ourselves. Can you imagine someone raised in NYC over hearing the following comment and having any idea what it meant.

"My buddy added a 5x5 muley toad to his bone collection over the weekend, and followed up with a tank of an ol' boar sporting 5" cutters. Gave all the credit to the new German glass on his 700 tactical."

Yet we all understand it perfectly. Hunter shoots a 10pt Mule Deer buck and large ferel hog with his Remmington 700 Tactical bolt rifle topped by a new Zeiss scope.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Your right. I never thought of that. When I see the numbers 308, 243, ect., it has a whole different meaning to me than someone who doesn't hunt.

Thank you all for reply smile

Dkershen, nice example! Maybe it is worth to present it in my work smile

Deerfeeder, thank you. I hope there is no sarcasm wink Mistakes are unfortunately inescapable... especially when I write sth late at night after the hunting day smile

Maybe someday I will share the results with my comment here.

In Poland hunting is perceived as a tradition, culture and the way of living. It is considered negative when someone here tells that hunting is a sport. Therefore the usage of the language is different. Following Dkershen's example you can notice that it is in large extent a technical style. Majority of words and expressions appear in different disciplines. On the other hand, the language used in Poland developed for hundreds of years and is completely incomprehensible for others.

by the way, do you know the number of hunters in your state and how does it compare to the number of people living there?

In Poland there are more or less 100 000 hunters for 38 000 000 people... quite few.

Darz Bor

As of 2010, the US has approximately 22 Million hunters according to a study done by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. This would be right at 7 percent of the population. Unfortunately this number has been on a slow downward trend.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Gosh dkershen, Did you have to use NYC for the example? lol They don't even know where milk or beef comes from. Most think, from the supermarket. Oh well.
