He had a 10" beard and nice spurs, didn't weigh him. Didn't go out until 10-pretty windy, but called whenever the gusts subsided-called in a hen, and she brought 2 gobblers along with her, one 10" beard, one 7-8". I think the gobblers are sticking by those hens right now-I just yelped to bring her in. Used my shotgun, next time I go out I may take the bow. I don't believe I could have got this one with a bow today, they came in from behind me, the movement would have been unforgiving as I don't use a blind, just sit next to a tree. Turkey hunting is the best-and dinner tonight will be good too! [img:center]http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x374/huntingtexasgrandma/[/img]

They were hittin my call really hard in Blanco, just could not get them to come out in the open. Did you use a decoy? Nice bird

blancobuster-
I hunt near a hilltop above a creek, and placed a decoy about 15 yards in front of me facing uphill-but the hen came from behind me and below-there was far too much tall grass and brush for her to ever see the decoy. But I always stick one out, can't hurt. On opening day I had a jake come up to the decoy. I am located in the middle of alot of nesting and strutting areas, but these gobblers seem to be staying right with the hens. She came out to the calling, they just followed her in. I haven't tried hunting in the afternoon yet, but my favorite time to hunt is traditionally around 3:30, it's just been too windy in the afternoons for effective calling in the area I like to hunt. Good luck to you-

No, not actually. I killed one Sat. morning on my property in LA. He weighed 17.4 pounds, 10" beard, and matching 3/4" spurs. Nice bird though grandma, congrats.

Let me clarify it then....first kill "POSTED" on the forum! LOL! A quick name search turns up no such post of Lousyana kills.

Congrats on the bird though Strutter! Post up the pic's and story of that old East of the Sabine Union Parish yard bird. I've never hunted on that side of the river but do some work in Jackson Parish and it looks pretty dang birdy!

cheers

You are correct sir, hers was the first one posted. The Union Parish longbeards are pretty crafty. I had to battle two other hunters to get this bird. He roosted on my southern boundary line, which happens to border a clearcut where another hunter was set up. The other hunter was set up across the powerline on a small two man lease. The bird had been in the middle of my property, but opening morning I guess he had different plans. The hunter on the other side of the line was calling wat too much, so I figured the gobbler wouldn't cross over. I set up on the edge of the line. The hunter on the southern border shot last weekend on youth weekend. I only hope if they connected it was actually a youth who took the bird. There has been one less gobble on my place since then, so I'm assuming they connected. I was able to call in a couple hens and three jakes, and with them came the longbeard. He never paid the other hunters any attention. It was a 30 yard shot. Nothing like opening day success.
