Go to an area where you know there are gators and wait. They'll show themselves. Right now find a spot where they come up on the bank to sun themselves. That way you can shoot him on land and not have to worry about snagging him after the shot. If you're trying to catch one before you kill it,use some good ripe road kill and hang it from a tree.

N.La.Beagler is obviously from Louisiana. The method he describes would not be legal in Texas. You can't shoot an alligator on the bank or free swimming with a firearm and snag him after. There was a couple experimental public draw hunts in the early years of our alligator season that allowed this, but it is not a legal method now. You can legally take an alligator from public water provided you are on private property. That is provided its in season, is legal for county. And that rules and regulations, tagging, and reporting requirements are followed. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/planning/alligator/Season opens April 1st. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/season/animal_listing/#alligator

As I read the rules it simply says you need to set the bait line on private land but if you were to archery hunt them or gig one you could be on public water is this right

Caught this one on a rattl trap lol... not exactly what we were trying to get, but it was def cool when it happened. Of course we didnt kill it, just got our lure back, took some pictures and let it swim off...they are some cool, mean creatures. I still dont know what we wouldve done had we caught a big one...

Lol, nothing.... Prolly would have went to the bottom on you or tried to pull the boat up in the brush. Last big one I hooked into was with 60# braid and it took me a while to get the boat out the buckbrush.

The one I hooked would have taken an arm off, so I gladly let it have me lure. My wife was not impressed with our gator experience either. At my old hunting lease, throwing a hornytoad off a pier winding out through cypress trees in a marsh would bring in a lot of the little devils..... She would rather stand on the bank and watch with the snakes.

I'm asking this beocuse it was about to be a reality.. It will depend upon the county he has his pond in. If it is located in a Non-Core County, yes, you could shoot one in that pond (only 1 gator/licensed hunter) with a valid hunting license, landowner permission and Hunter Education Certification (if born on or after Sept. 2, 1971) and you must fill out an Alligator Hide Tag Report http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications...report_form.pdf to be able to get a CITES tag for the alligator. That season is from April 1 - June 30. If you are in a Core County, then you must have TPWD Alligator biologists come out to the property and do a site inspection/evaluation to justify for issuance of CITES tags...that season is from Sept. 10-30 Here's the link for taking alligators in Texas - http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/alligator/
