That is pretty wel my thoughts. I have to have scopes on everything, only way these old eyes can hit the target.

I have a fixed 6 on my 204 for calling varmints.

For deer, i use a variable power scope.

I have read many interesting points most you have made. I would just like to add that I have many rifles. One, a 30-30, I have been shooting since I was 5. In 31 years of shooting everything under the sun. I can tell you a 30-30 is good to 300 yards. I have made shot at 282 yards. I agree the knockin power is so to good, but then again its all about placement. I have a 3x9 Redfield, an I am a firm believer that you can not shoot what you can not see.

Lots of people use a 30-30 for a brush gun. If you are hunting in heavy brush, you can get by with a less powerful scope, because the shots will be closer.

The higher the magnification, the more parallax influences the point of aim vs. the point of impact. On a rifle that is going to be used for 200 yards max, I would use no more than a 3-9X power scope, and keep it at a lower magnification unless I really needed the 9X for a longer shot. Putting a cheek rest on your stock will also minimize apparent crosshair movement due to parallax by keeping your face in the same position every time.

While not my primary hunting rifle, I do own a Marlin 336. I have a 3-9x40 scope on it and I would not want anything with any lower magnification. With a good quality scope, even in lower light conditions, you can still see clearly to shoot accurately. I have found that with mine, if it is so bad that I could not shoot on full magnification, it is well past legal shooting time anyways. I keep it on lower magification when hunting in areas where I expect a shorter shot, but like the option of turning it to higher magnification when I want.

Why does anyone have to explain what they like? I like a 2-7x on a 30-30. Some like a 4x. You obviously like a 9x. It doesn't really matter either way.

BECAUSE, IF ANYONE HAD READ MY ORIGINAL POST, THEY WOULD HAVE READ MY ORIGINAL QUESTIONS!!! For the love, folks! Because I don't understand "everyone's" knee-jerk response to how a 30-30 should be scoped and am trying to learn.

And for the record, I've never stated what I have on my rifle, and it's not a 9x. It's a 4x12x 56mm. Now, all the jackweed keyboard cowboys tell me how foolish I am for asking questions and having the wrong scope. Please. Help me to feel welcome on this forum by answering whatever questions you assumed I asked without really reading and ridiculing my need for explanation. Thanks to the few of you who had the ability to add something beneficial. It's appreciated. This is my primary hunting rifle, by the way. All I want is to maximize the utility of my gun and learn from others the questions I asked.

Now, excuse me, apparently I need to go change my pad.

easy, brazman. Just understand that a lot of folks on this forum (maybe all!) are very passionate about their passion for hunting. grin Looks to me like you have gotten your question answered...and alot more. Isn't that better than being ignored! smile

Pretty much it right there...I keep a Nikon Prostaff 4x32 on my 336 and a Leupold 3-9x40 on the .30-06.

I've taken a couple of hogs at around 120 yards with the .30-30 and a doe a few years ago at around 140 yards. Most of the shots and kills were under 100 yards, and my current setup is 75 yards from the feeder.

Happens all the time, you just have to roll with it.

Guy says, I've got this problem with a scope, what can I do besides send it back to factory? First six posts say send it back to factory.

Guy says, can't decide between this Leupold scope or this Nikon, which should I get? Gets four posts saying get a Viper, Zeiss, etc.

They are just trying to help, well most of them are.

Welcome to the Forum.

Good Hunting,
Gary

So, to sum up what everyone is saying.....buy two scopes that fit the same rings! A fixed for 100 yrd or less and a variable for 100 yrds or more. May help to have a quick detach ring, that way you could carry both!! Hey, I think where on to somethin........

Dude chill the eff out. Youre not trying to learn anything or you wouldn't be getting defensive.

Well, you're obviously not interested in being helpful, either. So go the "eff" away. confused2
