Depends on who you are calling. I guess it depends on whether its a local, out of state, or international call.......

I was reading an article in a magazine, can't remember which one, on the DC. I was looking at one of the RNT's or Zinks, but right before I bought one, I read the article. DC said unless the call shoots, plucks and cleans the ducks for you, there's no need to spend over $30 on a call. I don't know how true that is, but it makes sense to me. Seems to me it's just one of those things that shows you've got money, not that you can call. I can't hear a difference and there are some $25 calls out there that are super easy to use and blow. I've called and killed ducks for 12 years with a Faulks's $12 wooden call from Academy. Just my opinion.

If you count the DC Pintail/Wigeon Whistle I have in my arsenal, I have 5 calls in all. A Primos Winch, Phat Lady, and Yo Sista, and a DC Wood Duck and the DC whistle. I've listened to some guys blow these high dollar RNT's and such and they didn't sound any different from mine.

I have never had an expensive call, always the cheap Academy calls.
Went and got me an expensive one for the first time two years ago, and I still use my others more than that one.

No good single reed call is less than $75 period.

if you give more than a buck fifty for a DC call you got screwed. Unless you never hunt in wet conditions.

If you truly think a $30 call has the same capabilities as a higher end one you are mistaken; that or you dont have the skill to use what a higher end call can offer.
The only calls I like under the $75 mark are the Echo Diamondwood, and the poly Southern Game Calls. No, I am not saying they are at the same level as the higher end stuff, just saying I like them.

I have both and by no means a calling god, i am avg to a little below. I get the job done basically
What I have noticed is the higher priced call I have does not seem to stick near as bad as a cheaper call I have. It could be me but thats my experience

I would determine what you want in a call first and then picking a call that you think is a good value instead of picking the price range first.

The only thing that costs less than $75-$80 a call is plastic. Plastic straight and simple does not produce sound like the dense woods and acrylics used in the higher end calls. Have you looked at some of the custom call makers that use Delrin?? Google it if you haven't heard of it. Cadence makes one for around $50. Lots of guys like the sound Delrin produces
"Daddy!, that big woman we saw at Walmart, her belly looked like a busted can of bisquits!"

Depends. If you can control it enough to get the full range of what it can do. Spend the money on a call you like and can control. If all you want to do is quacks and the occasional greeting call. It doesnt matter. I have a $100 echo XLT coco that I hardly use anymore. My fav call this year was a $40 double reed echo poly/timber. Doesnt have the range of the XLT single, but its harder to make mistakes on that will cost birds. When I concentrate I can make the XLT sing all kinds of tunes, but in a real hunting situation, at least like most I experienced this season, I am thinking about way too many things at once. Besides, they were really only responding to a greeting call and single quacks to keep them on line most of the time this year.
I know nogeese is the 'you only need 4 academy decoys and a whistle' type of guy, though. You know, the 'fair weather waterfowler'

You know, the 'fair weather waterfowler' I've still got a few calls I want to mess with, one of them is the Double Nasty by Buck Gardner...still under $30 at most places and I have heard a lot of good things about it. I'll prolly always stay under that $30 when buying calls for hunting...I've always wanted some collectible calls just for the investment value, not to use, figured I'd put them in a display case on the fireplace mantle......

A friend of DnB stacks green to epic proportions and will never blow anything but a Haydel's DR-85. So I don't think it matters if you can blow it and make it sound like a duck.
So spend whatever you want and practice with it. I ain't good but still trying to get better. My favorite up to this point is my RNT Alpha 2.
I have a Double Nasty and it is a good call, I like it too. I bought a reed and a half last year that I like too.

Used a Double Nasty 2 my first 2 seasons. It worked good for the basic stuff. It doesnt sound worth a flip anymore. I know it just needs new reeds and a tune. But it has a strong flavor of old grizzly wintergreen, coastal gumbo mud, and aluminum foil tacos in it. Plus I like my Echos now.
