I have wondered that my self... Cause i have seen on TV bowfishing for sharks, sting rays, and who knows what else... I am thinking that maybe the saltwater side of it is different cause they have to regulate spear guns also... so that is a good question.

Im pretty sure you can shoot flounder. We used to "gig" them when I was a teenager. I dont see why you couldnt shoot them. I see why your asking though. You cant shoot game fish on freshwater. I honestly dont know for sure.

I just looked this up at TPWD a couple weeks ago. Anything that isn't endangered or defined as a game fish is legal:

Game Fish (includes hybrids or subspecies of fish on this list):

* Bass: Guadalupe, largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, striped, white, yellow
* Catfish: blue, channel, flathead
* Cobia
* Crappie: black, white
* Mackerel: king, Spanish
* Marlin: blue, white
* Pickerel
* Red drum
* Sailfish
* Sauger
* Seatrout, spotted
* Sharks
* Snook
* Spearfish, longbill
* Swordfish, broadbill
* Tarpon
* Tripletail
* Trout: brown, rainbow
* Wahoo
* Walleye

With this note:

No minimum lengths or daily bag limits apply to non-game fishes, except:

* For alligator gar, there is a limit of one (1) per day. On portions of Lake Texoma, harvest of alligator gar is prohibited during the spawning season in May.
* For Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin, there is a daily limit of one (1) trophy-sized common carp, defined as a carp measuring 33 inches or more. No limits apply to smaller carp.

That's what I thought. Thanks Larry! Although I always thought of flounder as a game fish......good to know.

I'm with ya there. Like somebody else said, we used to spear 'em when I was a kid growing up on the coast. But that was a long time ago... I wasn't sure if anything had changed.
