Hello all
I might be moving to Texas, and I love quail hunting! When I research this I notice a lot of mentions of leases and not much public land. If I move there, it would be north of DFW.
Does one need to invest in a lease for quail and some duck? What parts of the state are good for quail hunting? Are there public areas that aren't hammered for quail? I'm used to drivng 2-3 hours for day trips now. Any info for a quailaholic would be appreciated.

Quail numbers way down, leases expensive, best numbers in So. Tx., few if any birds north of DFW. You made your mind up about moving?

Chet's right, not real good hunting right now unless you drive several hours south of Dallas. Our lease is 2 & 1/2 hrs north of Dallas in Oklahoma & we averaged 2-4 coveys in 4-5 hrs of hunting all season.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

At least living north of DFW you'll be closer to Kansas, and they have lots of public land. BOY!! we need spell check

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

My guess would be Ohio. They have great quail hunting up there.

Plan to drive to Oklahoma, Kansas, or South Texas. Maybe a little action in the panhandle or west Texas too. I think there are a few pockets of birds here and there closer but nothing to bank on. Lots of good preserves around if you don't mind pen raised birds. We just had an event at TTT Outfitters today and had a great time. They have some great land and strong flying birds.

You can probably get on a lease withing 2-4 hours of dallas for 2-3 bucks an acre. You'd need about 1000 acres per person who is going to be hunting on the lease...so plan on spending 2-3k, just for quail rights. This year such a lease would probably have yielded 2-3 coveys in 4-5 hours of walking. You can probably also get a deer lease for about the same and typically have access to the place year round for all game...but the quail habitat might not be as good.
I used to live in Western WA (Port Orchard)...man i miss living up there. I hunted quail a few times just south of Wenatchee...Chukar too. I also hunted ducks on potholes reservoir once...we spent most of our time breaking up the ice and shivering. I hunted a lot more in western WA, in Olympic national forest for grouse and the coastal areas for ducks.

well, beatarmy, that sounds a little different than around here. I live in the Snoqualmie area, and drive a lot to Yakima. There's very good quail in that area. I also do a bit of grouse in the Teanaway, north of Cle Elum.
This is very good info, thanks everyone who answered.

Hey dr730 is their 20 bird hunt for $275 with your own dogs? Texas Gun Dog Club members get 25% off. I think it's 20 for $200 but I don't quote me on that.
Say When.....

Unfortunately there is not much public land. You will need to look for a good lease and I would focus on the Pandhandle region. There are places with good quail numbers and they have great waterfowl hunting up there.

I'll be heading down to DFW area in the next couple of months. Any advice on how to find leases for quail, or is that like asking where is your hunting spot?
