nidea These warnings are indicating potentially serious side effects, when applied as indicated.

And that is the minimum required disclosure of what is known. What remains unknown? What is suspected, but not yet disclosed?

The point is that just hosing down your land may have serious consequences beyond killing the cactus. Go slow and use the methods least likely to have unintended long term consequences.

In this instance, the biopersistence, biocentration, and side effects on legumes are some potentially serious things to think about.

Something to consider fwiw from today's Wall Street Journal - The rate of fatal occupational injuries for farmers and ranchers is 38.5 per 100,000 full-time workers, versus 4.4 for firefighters, and 13.1 for police and sheriff's patrol officers, according to U.S. Labor Department data for 2009, the most recent available.

nideaThat why it always says to read and follow directions. The key words are "READ AND FOLLOW". That is why they put them on the product since it is labeled as "Restricted Use" and they don't just let anyone who is untrained and not have an applicators license buy it or use it.

If the directions are read and followed, those are the disclosed effects when correctly applied.

I really hope people aren't pouring diesel every where to kill something.

diesel and Roundup is a great mix. I used diesel as a drift agent for years, it costs too much now, though, even the off-road stuff.

I've used diesel mixed with Remedy. Follow the instructions on the label. The pear needs to have moisture in the pads for it to be effective.

+1 on the diesel mixed with Remedy (Remedy Ultra). I was taking out thousands of yucca last year with the Remedy Ultra / diesel and would occasionally run across some prickly pear - so I gave them a spray as well. Checked on the progress a few weeks later and it took care of the prickly pear just as good as the yucca.

Except most labels don't have:

VERY TOXIC TO AQUATIC PLANTS. Do not contaminate an aquatic environment with
chemical or empty container. Do not spray over, or allow to drift over, an aquatic
environment. Do not use this product on the bottoms of drains, ditches or irrigation channels.
HARMFUL TO TERRESTRIAL VERTEBRATES. Use only as directed on this label.

CLOVER RE-ESTABLISHMENT:
Picloram, an active ingredient in Tordon Brushkiller is injurious to legumes and residues in the soil
may prevent early re-establishment after treatment.

Our place has a dense cover of tanglehead grass. It will grow to over 6 foot tall in one year and is pretty thick. When you burn that stuff it produces alot of heat and if repeated will kill the brush we have burned a couple spots controll burn and it was pretty hard on the brush. Since then we have kinda slacked off on the controll burn, disk and shred roads and whatever else we can to make way for forbs and new growth.

We have also had one "wild fire" started by a cigaret.

blackfoot is right - controlled burn first lets you go with lower rate of picloram (Tordon). less impact on beneficial forbs (weeds).

Surmount is also labeled for pear now. In fact the TX Ag Extension Service is also recommending it now.

Its also cheaper than Tordon, and in my experience works just as well.
