Anyone hunt deer in or near wood county in east Texas? Just want to know when you typically see rutting activity begin. Just bought some land near lake Fork and have everything ready to go. Just curious of whats typical for that area.

Second question... Do you have lot's of hogs? do you see that effecting your deer hunting (east Texas)

Last question... Have you done food plots in or near wood county? What have you found to work best for atracting deer?

Rut: Early November and again in early January. At least I have killed bucks in the rut during those times.

If ya happend to find a good scrape in January, hunt it hard.

Hogs in aour area, Cass County come and go. On opening day for the last 3 or 4 years, there are some numb nutz arcross the highline from me who shoot about an hour before daylight. I think they are spotlighting pigs when they get to there stand. So it in effect pigs do effect my deer hunting from time to time.
On the one stand I have a feeder, I have never killed a deer there. Probably feeding at night and feeding pigs etc.
We plant oats and clover for the most part. We also use fertilizer.

It ain't easy being me.

I was raised and still hunt roughly 13 miles east of Quitman in Wood county. Young bucks will be chasing the last half of October, by the middle of November it is pretty much done. Last year I took a buck on opening day that was trailing a doe. If you bow hunt you'll see young bachelor groups early in October and bucks chasing at the end of the month.

The buck/doe ratio is out of whack so the rut can be a long fizzle instead of a one week bang.

Our place does not have hogs. We are a few miles from any bottomland and have yet to find a hog on our place but most of the county is overrun with them.

Texas parks and wildlife have listed on their web site the average breeding dates for every region of the state.
You might check their site for more info.

I am in Houston County. I always take off the second 2 weeks of deer season for the rut. And I have seen the pigs run off the deer before; kill them all!!!!!
