Went hog hunting at our place last weekend. Got a great little pig for the smoker, but also some bad too. For the past couple of years we have been building our population back up from previouse hunters and this year, the best buck we have, a 3.5 yo 9pt showed up with a jacked up leg. Wouldnt put any weight on one of his front legs at all. Didnt apear to be a puncture wound from a horn or gun, no blood or even ruffled fur. We have a hand full of older mature bucks that dont have much for horns, but rule the place... we were afraid to shoot too many off in a year, but I can guarantee you we wont make the same mistake next year as they seem to be tearing up our younger deer that have alot more in the horn department, just young yet.

The good news, he hobled over to the freshly filled protein feeder and ate and ate... and ate didnt even run off when we got out of the blind. He has all the food he can eat and water close by hopefully he will make it!

He should be okay. We have a nice buck at our place that we call Ghostrider because he comes out of no where that has had a broken leg now the past three years. The guy's I hunt with thought as long as he could go like he has been we weren't going to take him until next year when he will be a five and a half year old deer. I saw him once this past season and he looked great.

Was the injury to a back leg or front leg? Any swelling?

It was his front right side. He seemed to favor it pretty bad, no swelling yet, but he was deffinately a little run down from the rut, not bad, but not as fat and happy as he was a couple months ago.

He'll probably be OK,I have seen deer with three legs run just as fast as those with four.

I don't think it was a sad day. It was one of your most important day of learning. Then what about your next hunting. Have you stopped or still continuing. Please share your fantastic idea too.

We had an older 3 legged doe out in San Saba several years ago we nicknamed "Hobbles". She was missing the lower portion of her left leg. She stayed around for a long time 'cause we made a rule that you couldn't shoot "hobbles". She was like a spy though - if you watched her long enough you found out where the bucks were. She didn't miss much and could run with the best of 'em.
