Im lookin for a set of winter/mud tires for my 99 Tacoma TRD. I will keep a set of street tires mounted for summertime/hwy use.

My questions is two fold:

1. Is skinny or wide tires better?
2. What brand/style?

Thanks in advance!!!

If you are looking at a lot of mud the buckshots are awesome. Snow and mud are different animals. In snow you want the tire to pack because snow on snow is good. In mud you want a tire that is self cleaning. There is not an A/T made that is a GOOD mud tire. There is a reason they are called All Terrains. As far as wide remember 2 things:

- you cannot float a 4000 - 5000 mud truck on mud
- The wider the tire the more HP and torque you need to push it

I voted for "wide" but wouldn't exceed 10.5 and I voted for
"other" on tire style because I'm partial to tue SS Bogger, if your Tacoma is stock then I would look for something in the 31x10.5 range and you will be unstoppable if you know how to drive offroad.

I am looking at the Dura Tracs for my next tire on my Tacoma but I deal primarily with rock and cactus. I am looking at the 265x75 because they are a little narrower and taller than the 70s.

Stump Jumper--- have you thought about a 255/85/16? I ran that on a chevy 3/4 ton and it was a great setup, tall enough to give the needed clearance but thin enough to not cause to much hydroplaning on wet pavement. Plus they didn't take any power away from the truck and I was able to go taller with out modifying the suspension because of the narrow width. The difference between 265/70 and 265/75 is about not quite an inch in height but same width

I am a huge fan of Nitto tires and dont like them too wide. I have 285 on both my 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. They are wide enough to look good, but narrow enough to get down and get some traction.

I might have to look at them. a 255/85/16 is 33" and the 265/75 is 31.6". Not sure if they will fit on a Tacoma. The 75 series are a little narrower than the 70s it is just not as much difference as a 85.

When I had the Jeep, I purchased some Goodyear Wrangler Authoritys from Wal-mart at 135.99 a tire. Having been around jeeps all my life I was skeptical but it had a deap cross lug patern that was not a full on M/T but alot more agressive than a typical A/T.

I ran them for almost 15K miles until I sold it and they still where in great shape, I used them in all kinds of terrain and they did well in Snow, Rocks, non thick mud, in clay and thick mud they would gum up and you had to keep speed to keep them clean and biting the nice thing was if you got stopped you could romp them and they would clean.

The best thing was they did not SING on the highway.

or look at a 235/85/16, its a tall and skinny tire that should fit your tacoma. I had an 02 Tacoma TRD, great little offroad machine, and i ran the 255/85/16 with a little trimming around the front tires
