I would like to know of some good hunting books to read. I prefer books about deer, mule deer or whitetail, or elk hunting or varmint hunting like mountain lion or bear. Fiction or non-fiction will work, but I would like something that would hold my attention. With football season and deer season over with, I am looking for some good titles to purchase for reading.

Not in your genre, but Horn of the Hunter is an excellent read!

Anything by Jack O'Connor is good.
The 3 best whitetail books, IMO, are the classic
Hunting Trophy Deer by John Wootters, and the 2 David Morris books, Hunting Trophy Whitetails and Advanced Strategies for Trophy Whitetails.

C.J. Box has written about 8 or 10 books about a Wyoming game warden. They're all good. Gene Hill has written some good books.
Like Uno said, Jack O'Connor is good and probably more knowledgeable about hunting rifles than 99% of other writers. Both he and Hill have passed.

A guy I know has written a couple of hunting books. The first one I have read, called A Shot Well Placed, is very good about his personal hunting experiences around the world. I just got his second book, Out of Bullets, my dad told me it was better than the first. I really enjoyed the first one. Authors name is Johnny Chilton.

I am reading a book now titled "The Greatest Hunting Stories Ever Told" and it is VERY good. Short stories by various literary greats and past and current outdoor writers.

I bet you'll like the Ben Rehder books: Six books of fiction about Blanco County game warden, John Marlin. Hilarious, fast reading who-dunnits. If you live in the DFW area, you may borrow my copies....just pm me.

The NEW AGE HUNTER by Anthony P. Mauro, Sr. "Ant" is a personal friend, we've hunted together and he has written a great book that all hunters need to read! The following is from Amazon:

The New Age Hunter makes use of important facts and figures from government agencies, private organizations, and renown experts for supporting its bold insights, which cover a wide range of topics that include:

· Stories of hunting No. American and African game
· Why man hunts in the current millennia
· How hunting adds to America's character
· The hunter as conservationist and wildlife manager
· How hunting supports a healthy ecosystem
· Hunting ethics and "Fair Chase"
· The outlook for hunting's future

The Best of Outdoor Life. It has lots of hunting stories by people like Teddy Roosevelt, Zane Grey, Jack O'Conner, etc. It has original articles from Outdoor Life Magazine dating back to 1898. Very interesting to read about hunting a hundred years ago through recent times. up

I have read most of them, they are pretty goofy and outlandish, but definitely entertaining and funny. I like Billy Bob and Red's ridiculous plans the best I think...

Also C.J. Box novels are good. The main character is a Wyoming Game Warden dealing with hunting mysteries. A bit more serious/dark than the tone of the Ben Rehder novels. Check your local library I am sure they have some selections from either author.

Hunting Trips of a Ranch Man, T.Roosevelt. His first hand accounts of hunting trips while ranching in the Dakotas in the 1800's. Very interesting.
