Anybody have any input on the Rem 740 vs the 742? Good, bad, any input?

There were some mechanical differences, 742 were much more prolific and parts are more available, both were decent guns, most were 2-3MOA guns... there are some rare ones that are worth quite a bit

I have a 740.

Its pretty fun to shoot, but isn't the most accurate gun in the world.

I have shot a friends 740 and like it. Max distance was probably 80 yards - killed a nice 9 pt with it a few years back. Looking now for something in semi auto for a pig gun - again - mostly close range.

I posted because I have heard some not so great things about the 742 and wanted some input.

Thanks folks.

I have a 7400 in 30-06 and have killed deer well over 200 yards. It is more than accurate enough for most hunting situations. It is sighted in at 200 yards. And has killed pigs at 250 yards.

I have a Rem 742 in .243, it was the first gun I used for deer hunting. I think most of the accuracy issue is the heavy trigger pull. It was all I used for several years so I had no problems hitting what I shot at. It's fine for shots out to 250 yds.
