New to the thread and to hunting. I went on my first hunt today, got my first hog, an 80 pound sow, shot through the neck right threw the heart from a stand. Hornady ammo went straight threw her! Almost no breastbone left to cut. Felt good to finally call myself a hunter.

A tip I learned that worked great, I used grape koolaid mixed with cheap beer and some old fry oil. I had two packs of pigs roll up, missed my second pig but got the first.

I did have a question. Cleaned the pig afterwards, got a small cut on my finger while doing it, didn't notice it until after I was done. Should I worry about it? Is there anything I need to watch out for in the line of potential symptoms?

If you start rooting for grubs or tubers then you should probably go to the doctor or the vet...

Congrats on the kill. In all likelihood you'll be fine. If you feel bad, go to the doctor. In the meanitme, put up a pic!!

Thanks for the advice and the well deserved ribbing. At least you guys will know what happened if I District 9 out on everyone.

I did have some gloves, but it was those cheap [censored] plastic ones that look like horse insemination gloves. NExt time I'll bring something in neoprene.

I'll post a pic soon, waiting on my friend to send me the one he took.

Oh, and the cleaned pig was 70 lbs, so I'm guessing we were way off on the weight estimate. Hell we were pretty tired cleaning a pig by headlamp.

I've worked in a meat processing plant, and never used gloves. I don't use gloves when working with meat I get from the store. To me there's no more risk with wild game than domestic animals. I have never worn gloves when cleaning wild game, no matter the species. I assume I'll either nick myself with the knife or a bone at some point, but my personal feeling is that the risk is highly over-rated. That said, there is some risk, so it's a question of how much risk you think it is and how much you're willing to take.

When I've hunted public areas, there seems to be about 20% of the people that will wear gloves when cleaning, so obviously not everyone agrees with me.
