A hisorical spreadsheet we've maintained since 1999, Cappy's first waterfowl season. Detailed data by species wasn't started until 2004. Remi joined us as an 8 week old pup in November of 2004 so her first season wasn't until the fall of 2005. Rusty was just 9 months old when season began last September for early Teal.

Oppps ... just spotted an error in the spreadsheet I have to go back in and correct. This was Remi's SIXTH season so her average is actually 46.5 per season.

Interesting...according to your kill #'s they were up over last year. Also killed significantly more geese, was there a reason you think for that or you just flat saw more?

Thanks for sharing, I really should do something like that.

Other than my much improved face make-up, unbelievably outstanding calling, having a Labradoodle with a terrific built in ghillie suit ... just plain dumb a$$ luck. smile

Data is a great thing !!

I tend to conclude from the above is that this season was really not "slow" at all relative to other seasons. In fact, it was above average. There is always a story to the numbers, and maybe there is something skewing the data, but it looks like you had a relatively good season.

It would be interesting to see how this data plots on a daily or weekly basis, season over season, to see what trends the weather threw into it all since the general feeling is this season isn't getting good until about now.

LOL

I am sure that last year Cappy was a victim of too much water.

His place is good habitat year in year out.

Last year every field in Texas was flooded.

Good numbers Cappy every year I say I am going to start and keep track.

I never do.

Actually, we do maintain a journal by day showing; when and which blind we hunted from, what time we started, temp, sky conditions, wind speed and direction, moon phase, dawgs used and retrieves each, birds taken by species, and generally other observations. It's way too large and complex to try to post here but if you really would like to see it, PM me your e-mail addy and I'll forward a copy of this past year's IF you can open and read EXCEL spreadsheets.

Actually, the first half of the season produced more than half of our birds which is the opposite of normal for us. Moreover, the opening weekend of the 2nd part was gangbusters and then it turned to more skunks than not from there after.

My dad used to do that for bass fishing.

It's pretty cool to go back and see that bass were hitting white spinnerbaits and purple curly tail worms on Palestine in 1984.

Doesn't mean much nowadays, but it's cool to me.

Looks good Cappy! I keep a log myself but nothing like that, I barely find the time to sleep during the season. I may put all of the data together in something like this one day though, thanks for the idea.

Moose ... I owned a 45' charter boat in Hawaii for 15 years. We maintained a very thorough log including GPS co-ords on Big Marlin hook-ups way back in the day before they were so easily found like with today's electronics. Back then we had Loran devices and in the last few years of my owing that boat I even had a Loran guided auto-pilot ... state of the art chit in the late 80s! wink

We found that there were three primary lures that we ran on the long riggers in the face of a wave about six back from the transom that took 75% of the Marlin. Then one day the light went on. I liked those lure's appearance and therefore ran them at least 75% of the time.

DUH!

The most interesting thing I see is the two coots that were slain. Really cool spreadsheet, I am going to have to go look at pics to figure out the totals. Prolly won't get around to it.

very cool. I keep a journal on paper. I have a sheet for every hunt that lists the days take by sex and species. The weather, temp, etc.

Jim,

If you don't mind me asking, what are your numbers for the place north of the house only, for this year? I was trying to compare just your place north of the house with my place here, apples to apples so to speak.

If you mean our wetlands near Sam Rayburn School, the figures in my totals (minus four Ringers) are 100% from that property. We don't hunt anywhere else and only had 3 guests there with us for the entire season. How was your season?

I still keep a journal on paper but I quit recording ducks by species. All I do now is just write down where I hunted, who was with me and how many ducks we killed.

I do like the format you have Cappy. Good stuff. up

Thanks for the numbers. We can't complain, we had a good year. Our numbers were a little below average though. Here are our numbers for the wetlands at the house only.

Mallards.........38
Gadwalls........29
Wigeon...........7
Teal ............28
Wood Duck ......3
Boot Lip ........14
Pintail ............7
Canvasback ......1
Canada Geese ...4
Total ...........131

Days Hunted 21
6.24 per day

I found it interesting that Cappy's '08 season was the highest. Ours was too.

There is also an iphone app that tracks all of your data for you. It also puts out charts/graphs, summaries of species, and blind analysis, etc. it is called Hunters iJournal. can't remember if it is free or costs, but i am using it. you can also add pics of the hunt, and it works for waterfowl, big and small game, everything. i used the spreadsheet method until i heard about this.

I have heard about that app. I bet is works good. Can you export the data to a spreadsheet? If so, I should use it. But if it is a proprietary app and does not let you export, then I would not like it. Eventually you will probably want to move on to some other method/app, and you may lose your history. Also if you drop your phone in the water, you could loose your data unless it lets you back it up somehow.
