riflefriend of mine wants a really nice bull barrell 308 rifle but is unsure about what gun he wants,, Remington 5r, ltr or sps, FNH pbr or spr, Savage model 10 or 12, he likes mine but he thinks my 5r may be the exception to the rule for remingtons (he dont like big greeN).. he really likes the winchester style actions.. his intended use is 600yds or less shooting, with the capability to reach out longer.. would consider 16" to 24" tube but plans on hunting with it, so a 20" tube would be more on par.. money avaiable for just the rifle is $1200.oo range.. give me your choice of rifles for that money or less.. rifle thanks

SPS tactical on sale right now at Cabelas

Numerous stocks at stockystocks.com in stock, no wait. He can get the color and style he wants

Timney Trigger and Safety for 125

This will add up under his budget and will be 20" and shoot great

My pbr is a tack driver and the action is one of the best IMO.

score to date is;
2 for sps tac.
1 ltr
1 savage
1 pbr

cheers
on a side note a dps friend of mine bought a used ltr earlier this month and basically handed me the scope and rifle.. (to set up for him)
remington ltr 20" no mods and no idea how many rnds through it, and a nikko stirling diamond scope that has the chrismas tree reticle and told me to set it up for him.. that rifle w/ 165 grn sgk's shot lights out,, it was as easy and fun to shoot as my 5r. scope wasn't great but was more than adequate think it was 6-24x50 lit reticle and it honestly was plenty of scope to get it done. he had less than $800 in the rifle and scope set up.. the mounts were off one of mine so they were free.. that rifle was really nice

Ya, but have you shot it? Can you stand behind your product or are you just saying that because you bought one?

just fyi guys and i appreciate it,, we know what's out there, we wanna know what you think about what you own and shoot. stuff you have personal shootin experience wth.. i have owned or currently own remington and savges (models listed above) or have handled and shot several others,,but we wanted a broader base of experience what wrk'd and what did not. thanks

Dee can you describe your set up, rifle specs and what kind of groups you are gettin and load data.. the pbr is prolly his 1st choice.. he really loves that winchester action.

brother n law wink i am sure he meant 1/2 MOA which would mean 1.5 inches @ 300,, that's doable and real good shootin.. what part of the state do you live in brother..

brother in law.. also just set up that sps tac and went on stockys' and got a thubhole laminate made one hell of a good looking gun and shoots sub moa just fine out to 100 with fgmm.. and with that stock is lighter than my savage sporter with 24" barrell.. i really like this gun for all kinds of hunting. deer2ttyl

haven't wrk'd up a good load of my own for this one it has been a lil picky about what it likes.. so i tried fgmm to try and just tst it out and get my starting point with this one.

QUACKWACKER, PLEASE ,, don't start the round debate, i won't get anyone back on topic after that soap that is soap box material there.. i will agree that there has been more load developmnt for the 308, but i can point to a couple of guys that shoot alot more than i do and while they have the 308, that is not always their go to gun.. 1 state trooper= 264win mag.. army buddy ==300wsm, and i used to think i would never own anything but a remington vssf in 300 win mag flag

I can not speeak for the savages.

The SPS Tactical - I have the AAC-SD version only differance is it is 1-10 twist for running subsonics and threaded by AAC for supressor use. Out of the box with a little sanding to the barrel chanel and my trusty Millet TRS-1 grouped 10 168gr Ballistic Tips into a .92 hole. I plan on adding a Bell & carson stock at some point but really like Houge after I opened the barrel chanel up, for now anyways.

As mentioned for under his budget he could get the SPS-Tactical, stock of his choice and trigger of his choice and still be under budget.

Remington 5R, Again great setup, I dont care for the stock color or the bead blasted stainless but for 99cents at walmart some spray paint would fix those complaints. Accuracy, every one I have touched was Sub MOA out of the Box. Again gun plus trigger of his choice and he is under budget.

FNH PBR the only ones I have used was the 16"/break, WOW its LOUD. Again most of the FNH bolt guns we have sold where Sub-MOA guns and alot of the SWAT guys here love them because there short and manuverable. Again under budget and not much else needed.

My PBR is a 20" fluted xp model with the factory hogue and dbm setup. Best group so far is the one below. I have since bought a hinged floorplate becouse I'm not fond of the dbm ( guess I'm kinda old school) and I'm in the process of deciding on a stock. BTW thats a 5 shot group at 100.

I don't understand your grouping. Is it all in that one hole? Am I missing something. ?

Yea its measured from the furthest outside hole to the other, one side had more of a tare to it not sure from what so I measured from where it stopped. I'm wanting to shoot this weekend and if I do I'll post some more pics, the only targets I found in my stash was .22 cal stuff.

I just got a FNH trooper in .308 . I have shot 1 box of Hornady Superformance 150g SST so far, I don't have enough brass to start loading yet, but I am very impressed whith it.
