Has anyone been on a Mexico hunt lately? I have been curious about the safety aspect of hunting down there. I would love to go kill a big muley, but it's kinda scary.

I wouldn't go till things simmer down.The areas known for good hunting in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon have had alot of Cartel violence lately. One town had police killed and the whole force quit. If you go be careful.

Yeah their hunting people down there right now, and the season is open and there is no limit.

i think sonora mexico for muleys would be safe.....but no way i would go around nuevo larado or tamulipas.

The place I am looking at is in Sonora near Coborca. A long way from the border, but you still have to drive down there and meet with the federalies to register your weapons.

Not worth it to risk your life for a deer.
Give it some time and see if it clears up.

Either that or pay to fly directly to the ranch and borrow a gun!

I appreciate the desire to hunt there. We hunt about 40 miles from the border in Terrell county. I would not go to Mexico for a beer much less a hunt right now, even the resort towns are sketchy. Good luck but watch your back, and front and both sides. There ain't a game animal alive worth your well being

I have driven across the country many times but can't say how safe it is to stay close to border. We cross at Laredo and get south of Monterrey as soon as possible. For driving as long as you stay on the toll roads there's no more danger than on I-20.

I doubt hunting there is any more dangerous than hunting with Texas rednecks...

I am sort of fond of hunting, but I am even more fond of waking up in the morning so that I can go hunting. If you go, you can tell me how it was. I am going to keep myself and mine in the good old USofA.

Never been around there but I will ask around how that area is. I will let you know as soon as I find something.

Don't go down to Old Mexico its not worth it. I have Mexican friends and family who will not go right now. There is alot of stuff even worse than what is reported on the news that goes on in Mexico. Stay safe and stay home.

New Mexico and Arizona have some pretty good muley hunting and not in a war zone. There is no way I am going into a war zone for pleasure.

First reports of the area are positive, safe area, but I will confirm with couple other sources as well. The war zone everyone is so eager to speak of is from Juarez to Chihuahua, and I wouldn't go to Tijuana or Mexico City either. Monterrey is not as safe as it used to be but not that dangerous that I would not go there.

If you put 1+1 together...homicide rate in Mexico has declined compared to recent years AND drug killings are targeting those who are involved in drug business, and their families, what do you get? It's actually safer to go there than in the past. Just stay out of the areas mentioned.

some buds of mine go every year.. said as long as you stay on the ranch you hunt and have all your papers and everything is correct, no problems....

I hunted last week in Sonora, Mexico and we crossed at Douglas, AZ. I did not see anything at all that made me fell threatened. The border patrol that we talked to said things are relative safe in that area but said not to cross in the El Paso and Laredo areas.

On another note, even if there was drug cartel presence in the area, they know their area. Why would they travel through area where they know hunters are present with high power rifles? It's about business to them and killing American deer hunters isn't profitable, especially when there is a danger they'll shoot back.

If Laredo is your closest crossing area, I wouldn't be too worried either. Use the Colombia Solidarity bridge. This will let you continue straight into toll roads and bypass Nuevo Laredo completely. Although we have never had problems in Nuevo Laredo either, it's just more convenient anyways.

I got a picture on my game cam last Spring of a Mexican guy that was HEAVILY armed. Made me think twice about getting back on my lease again. I am sure not going to go over the border where they are coming from. My lease is in Sutton County, Texas and is a pretty long ways from the border.

Just goes to show that most parts of Mexico could actually be safer than Texas...

There's no reason to take a chance on your life. There's plenty of kidnapping, murders, and beheadings. Some areas are safer than others, it's just a matter of judgement and what value you place on your life and your property. They do need all the American dollars and support they can get their hands on and yours will be appreciated, I'm sure.

It's even more dangerous for you longhorn. The cartels have bountys on cops.

The entire country is worried about Afganistan and Iraq. They have absolutely no clue as to how dangerous it is for people at our own border. Drug money is the only thing that runs an entire country that shares our border. If our goverment is going to concentrate on protecting it's people then I think that they have their priorities crossed. It's not like Afganies are bringing drugs to our kids. It's our own damn neighbors. If we want to "occupy" a country, maybe it should be one that we can actually help. Millions of Americans went and want to go to Mexico. I never heard of spring break in the mountains of Afganistan. Should just nuke that whole place and then get our priorities straight. Make an example of them and see who tries the next 9/11.
