BMD had it right, the rifle matters as much or more than the caliber.
I'm not arguing the WSM's are generally pretty accurate, but I've seen a couple that wouldn't shoot. I personally have never seen a 300 WM or H&H that didn't shoot great. Do they exist sure. But I base my opinions on what I've seen with my own two eyes or what people I trust have seen not what I read in a magazine or in a book.

And so everyone on this forum and I, should just take your word for it??? OK No, they absolutely shouldn't. They should go out and shoot and form their own opinions on what works. Just don't try to argue with actual experience by using magazine or book quotes.

But your right, in a way you didn't mean to be.
"How is a belted mag as accurate as a WSM with no belt?"..............."is just is".
Despite what Winchester wants you to think so they can sell guns.

Guys, this is simple. Out of the box rifle and out of the box ammo, 2 guns one in 300RUM which is a non belted case, and one in 300 Win mag (belted mag), 1 box of the same factory ammo each. FROM WHAT I HAVE POSTED IN THIS THREAD...(and what I have tried to show and explain), WHICH ONE WILL BE MORE ACCURATE??? ALSO KEEP IN MIND WHAT TX270 HAS ALSO POSTED... Please guys just chime in and take a stab at what caliber youd put a $10 bill on...

Despite what Winchester wants you to think so they can sell guns. What??? Remington ultra mag??? 300 winchester mag? winchester short mag? this has nothing to do with the manufacturers? The question is about belted or non belted

Still say the rifle has more to do with it than the cartridge period, dont think you can base it on which cartridge might buy a rum that shoots better or you might buy a win that shoots better but i have a 300 win that will shoot with any rum

I made a post earlier on my 300 H&H and I can honestly say it's the gun more me. I'm more accurate w/ that gun than anything I've ever shot.
If I miss a deer, I can't blame it on the rifle.
As to which 300 is the best round - shoot all that you can and use what works for you & to each his own.

It all comes down to what you are comfortable with that you like the best, we all have one of our own. I simply made a statement about what I thought was the more accurate cartridge, and got called out on it??? Why, I don't know really, I guess just because some guys on here like to stir stuff... 6 pages of posts later, here we are... Good Shootin to all!

YOU came out and made a matter-of-fact statement that the "RUM and WSM are the most accurate of the bunch". I was just wondering what experience you had that lead you to this conclusion.

Despite what Winchester wants you to think so they can sell guns. where did I say this and what exactly are you talking about? Check your clever Joe Dirt clip.... You lost me again... The video clip was for you buddy, because that was your explanation of how you were right and I was wrong... hence how I said Bingo your answer is... OKie dokie... My point is don't call me out when you cant back it up... I simply stated that the non-belted magnums, ie rum, wsm are more accurate than the belted big boys, and I believe I gave reason why they are, out of the box... You gave no reason whatsoever otherwise... I have also stated how accurate they (belted mags)can be and how one can get there. What have you given us that we can benefit from, besides a bunch of useless diareah of the mouth??? I have owned many belted magnums and got them shooting great, as well as I have owned several non belted magnums which also shot great. I have had a lot of experience shooting and have had more custom chamberings than i can count, and I have and do own several rifles that shoot sub1/2 moa. All I did is make a statement and I BACKED IT UP! You called me out and YOU CANT BACK IT UP! PERIOD, THE END

bandit,
I don't think we are understanding what the other is trying to say is part of our problem here.
I'm simply going by my experience loading for and shooting numerous belted and unbelted mags.
In my experience, I haven't found the non belted mags to be more accurate on average.
I have a bone stock 325 WSM that is a tack-driver, but I've also shot a .338 Win Mag that was the same way.
I've shot a 300 WSM that was a real dud, 1.5-2.0" groups on average with a variety of loads, but I also had a 300 Win Mag that was a dud. Both are gone now.
I've only dealt with one 7 WSM, it wasn't a shooter, but thats only an example of one rifle. I have two 7mm Rem Mags that were sub moa out of the box with more than one load.
I have found the "more inherently accurate" theory to be just that, a theory, in real life.
I agree they SHOULD be more accurate by design.
All I have for proof is my actual experiences with both types at the range and in the field. But all you've given is quotes and pictures from books.
I already knew what the books say and I know how headspace works, and like I said before I agree that in theory and by design a non belted round 'should' be more accurate, but field experience with both types have shown no advantage for one over the other in the accuracy dept. for me. YMMV.
Bill

I'd put $10 on the shooter, not the rifle manufacturer or the caliber. In my opinion most modern firearms are far more accurate than most shooters. JMHO.

I'm with Pirate on this one! Me too, there is no need for it in Texas... that said I have a 300 wby and love it and wouldnt trade it. I still say putting all personal preference aside you cant go wrong with the 300 win mag, it is easily the cheapest most available out of the bunch and will do everything needed that the others will (in a hunting situation) Whoever sujested 300 H&H... that is the worst one in my opinion, proabably one of the most expensive, hardest to find, and is proabably botom of the barel on the performacne end as well. Its simple 300 win mag unless you have a special desire for one of the others. matt

I shoot a Winchester Model 70 300WSM. It has only let me down once. 150 grain ballistic silver tip exploded on the point of the shoulder of a Red Stag. No penetration to the vitals. Most expensive round I have ever fired!!!! Changed to 180gr Accu Bond. No problems since! And it will out shoot a remington any day!!! lol!!!!!!
