I am thinking about going to Africa this summer on a Safari hunt. The guys at the range I go to have put together a hunt and are all going the same time. I was wondering if any of you have been on one? What was your experience like? Did you go with a group of guys? What did you hunt for?

What I am hoping to hunt are:

Waterbuck
Kudu
Gemsbuck
Blue Hardebeast

Thanks,

I am going in 2012. Set the hunt up through SCI. I will be in Zimbabwe on a 7 day/10 animal hunt. I added three animals so I will be hunting Eland, Kudu, Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala, Warthog, Duiker, Steenbuck, Jackal, Baboon and then I added a bush pig, Honey Badger and Hyena(taxidermy bills are gonna kill me). The safari operator is Impala African Safaris (www.impalasafaris.com) Hunt is about $4000 plus Airfare.

Go if you can. We went in the summer of 2009. PM if you have questions as there are plenty of pre trip requirements.

I have been 5 times and as soon as I can gather enough money I will go again. You will love it. Do your homework and check lots of references. Most outfits are on the up and up but you want to make sure. Visit websites like Africahunting.com and Accurate reloading for current information.

If you decide on a group hunt make sure it's with people you know very well. You don't want any problem people to ruin your hunt of a lifetime.I must say though, it's a slippery slope and it seems most people want to return again and again. Good luck, Jim

pretty amazing that you can go to Africa , take multiple animals, and still come out better off financially that taking a 180+ whitetail in way overpriced south texas.

I first went to South Africa when I was 14 and took a Impala, Blesbok, Wildebeest, Hartabeest and Reedbok. I 'm going back in May to shoot a Kudu, Nyala, and Warthogs. I really want to do a Leopard and Cape Buffalo hunt next.

I hunt with my uncle, http://www.rannsafaris.com/about.html

That is an amazing hunt. How far in advance do you need to schedule with them?

For those of you that have never been to Africa, be sure you consider ALL the costs. My wife and I were going this year but after looking at the total costs for the 2 of us (1 hunter & 1 observer) we have changed our mind.
Hunt-5 animals-7days hunting plus 2 non hunting days plus tips-$6500
Airline Tickets----$4800 to 5700 (low season or high season)
Taxidermist--$3000 to $5000
Shipping back to USA--$1000-2000
You can do the math.

Where were you going that your airfare was that high? I see advertised prices from the States to Joburg SA for around $1000 USD. I booked 3 tickets for 2 hunters, and one observer from DFW to Upington, South Africa for $6000 total in May of this year. Don't know how two tickets could be $5700 unless you were planning to go somewhere like Tanzania, or were booking a charter flight to the final destination.

I won an auction hunt at under half the advertised price/cost. My wife and my brother and I are going to Namibia for 9 days, and plan to take about 8-10 trophies between the two of us.

Also, think European mounts for all but the most special trophies.

Also shop the outfitters for trophy fee prices rather than the daily rate. While most daily rates are around 300-500 ppd, the trophy fees can vary wildly. Where I am going it was $900 for a Kudu last year, and this year it will be $1000. Last year he had a 59 inch Kudu taken, plus several others over 54 inches. Other places are close to $2000 for a Kudu and/or price based on how many inches it is a la South Texas Whitetail with the biggest being as much as $3500-5000. That is too much when others are so much lower.

Don't forget to add the taxidermist fees.

Von Jager, The price was given to me by Gracy Travel. The trip was from DFW to Windhoek on SAA with a overnight layover in Jo-Burg. The price included All taxes & fees associated with the airline tickets. I was told that the prices quoted online normally do not include taxes & fees. I have 2 outfitters looking for cheaper tickets and neither have contacted me yet. Like a friend that has been to Africa before said "carry a pocketfull of extra cash with you cause you will need it"

I average going once a year and my airfare is always under $2,000 total roundtrip. That is to Windhoek or even Zimbabwe on SAA. I usually get it done for around $1,400 - $1,600 total. Now I fly economy and do not fly business or first class so that I can use that extra money on trophies.

Try contacting Lori at http://www.travelexpressagency.com/

She got me three tickets, taxes and fees included, for 6000, and that was to an obscure destination, not Windhoek. I was quoted something like 1,500 per roundtrip had I chosen to go the Windhoek route, but I would have needed a charter or a rental car to get to my destination from there.

My family went to cruiser safaris. My dad shot 2-jackals, 1-kudu, 1-blue wildebeest,a eland,a zebra,a impala, and a warthog.I shot a impala and a steenbok, and my mom shot a blesbok. We went to Cruiser Safaris in South Africa. Ive went to hundreds of websites and they have the cheapest prices. The quality of animals are unbelievable. We will be going to the same place in 2013. www.cruisersafaris.com

A hunt based on only trophies being taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be,time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there. -Fred Bear

As long as I can walk and climb and see, I'll hunt North America, no matter the price.

When I can no longer walk and climb and see, I'll hunt Africa, no matter the price.

Alas, it will be sooner, rather than later.....
