Wondering if anyone has any advice on the effects of shortening the barrel on my m700 VLS. I'd like for the gun to be a little more friendly to carry and maneuever. The rifle currently has a 26" barrel. Would I lose much if any accuracy or velocity if I cut it down to say 22-24"

You will almost always lose velocity when you shorten a barrel. Not sure how much but you can bet it will be lost.

doesn' work every time but in most cases the greater the volume of powder the more velocity lost per inch when shotening the barrel. For instance a 30-30 will loose less velocity per inch than a 300RUM. There comes a opint of no further return where the bullet will actually start slowing down if a barrel is long enough, for inistance in a 22lr it is about 18 inches.

Weight loss not much but maybe little easier to use in a stand but not much weight in two inches of barrel

is the vls model a heavy barrel? if it is and you shoot really good groups now, then i would opt for barrel fluting instead.

Yes it is a heavy barrel and the groups are okay probably will have better groups as I have time to shoot it more. As far as barrels go would the weight loss be pretty noticeable going with a fluted barrel?

i can't think of the builders websites, i am sure someone will chime in, but they would list how many ounces vs length vs total spirals etc... you would notive the difference from a very good shop. bmd and others like kampfield - i would call him and get his opinion.

Not really you are talking about ounces by fluting barrel and bolt, it is a heavy gun, want a light gun you need to buy with smaller contour barrel, you can flute barrel, flute bold and cut and recrown to 24" and you will still have a pretty heavy rifle,

very true what bmd said. i own heavy barrel guns and standard sporter barrel guns and mainly stand or stationary hunt, so the weight has never been a concern for me. if you are doing a lot of stalking etc... then a lighter profile would be the way to go. the stretchy style slings do help take some of the felt weight off your shoulder.

good points, I like the rifle just would like something that is a more easy to carry when still hunting. Any suggestions on what fit this bill.

What Calibre?
Rem 700LTR's have 20" HB's in .223 and .308..
I would not shorten a .204 or a .22-250

COUNT ON SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 40 FPS FOR EVERY INCH OF BARRELL YOU REMOVE, AND MY 26" BULL BARRELL GUNS ARE MUCH HEAVIER THAN MY 20",, MY REMINGTON AAC W/ A BULL WEARING THUMBHOLE LAMINATE STOCK IS 4 OZ. LIGHTER THAN MY 24" SPORTER BARRELLED 2506,, BUT THAT IS APPLES TO ORANGES.. DIFF STOCK, SCOPES, MOUNTS, AND BARRELLS, BUT I'D SAY IT'S WORTH IT.. I LIKE MY 20" GUN FOR A TRUCK GUN.
In God I trust.. all others are suspect. ;))
