I just read the following. Anyone tried anything like this on wolves? Wolves play the same vanishing game. Shotguns wouldn't work, so the safety factor would have to be figured out better. Dogs might get chewed on, too:

Coyotes have learned to hold tight in dense cover—so tight that pheasant hunters often flush them within shotgun range. There's more than one way to collect a coyote. When the calling stinks, whistle up your dog(s) and try this:

Identify a dense bedding area and place blockers at likely escape routes. Make sure they have a safe shooting backstop. Two or more drivers—and the dog(s)—should enter the cover from upwind, then zigzag through it as if looking for pheasants. Two more flankers should parallel these drivers on the edge of the thick stuff where they can get clear shots at coyotes that squirt out the sides. The drivers should make plenty of noise while the flankers and blockers remain silent.

Wolves are a protected species in Texas... assuming they even exist here, which according to TPWD, they don't. Probably not many here have had a chance to hunt them anywhere legal. confused2

There are some red wolves in Texas from past restocking efforts.

Saw one in Leon county a few years back.

(waits for cameronoo to deny this eek )

The average hunter could not tell a Red Wolf from a coyote if their life depended on it.

What few Red Wolves were let in Texas were removed from the wild and placed in captive breeding situations to try and re-establish them as a species in the wild.

The only re-introductions that ever took place were in Tennessee, and did not work out.

Last I heard, the last remaining Red Wolves were in captivity at Glen Rose. Maybe some have been released but my understanding was that there were very few of them. I can't see anybody starting a re-stocking program with a minimal stock. As far as identifying them, I've seen Coyotes that were so red that initially I thought they were Foxes. Tough call.

The Red Wolf was declared extinct in the wild back in the 1980's and they are on the criticly endangered species list.

What ever you saw in Leon county was NOT a Red Wolf.

Wolves are a problem up north eating livestock. They're kinda like cougars. Livestock owners hate them and rightfully shoot them to protect their investment. Also, they are capable of killing and eating people.

Only if they have permits. Wolves are Federally protected.

Not exactly true. They may be capable, but there is no documented case of wolves killing humans.

Wolves are Federally protected once again in the U.S. So, if you really have that wolf itch, give Paul Trepus a call....

Google Kenton Joel. He was killed by wolves in 2005 in the United States.

Ok, I slogged through the whole long Wikipedia article on it. I would conclude that it was far from a documented case. Possible, but not 100% sure.
