Big time, have hunted in Jack county all my life and I'm 38 and this is the worst year I can remember for Jack county.
And yes the deer get big too.....

Eat at the Green Frog for breakfast, Herd's burgers are the best for lunch.
Good luck!

There are a lot of good deer in Jack Co. Don't judge anything by this deer season. A couple of years ago a guy killed a 200"+ typical at Wizard Wells, low fence, free ranging deer. I have three on the wall, all from Jack Co., 143 - 162 Gross. They don't come along every year but when conditions are right Jack Co. produces some good deer.

Good deer there for sure. You have to be picky and let them grow up. We have good habitiat but this year ewas bad cause 85% of our place is oaks and acorns. We have a lot of hidden water in the thick stuff and the deer just didnt have to move.

It was bad for the most part for us this year. They showed up the last 2 weeks of the season. Did manage to take a bow doe this year.

I went two times with a buddy in Jacksboro this year... his lease.... never even saw a deer. Don't think anyone on the lease took anything either... so yeah... guess it was a bad year.

They said they have killed a bunch in prior years though. confused2

There are no deer in Jack County. Spikes and nubbins on occassion. Not really worth hunting.

Jack County has been hunted out. It will be years and years before it ever gets good again. Best bet is further West, North, South, or East from here. But ya'll can still stop at our stores and restaurants...

Like others have said--this was one bad season. But, don't judge Jack on that. I still have not figured out this weird season.

I've owned 205 acres in SW Montague County for 25 years. I didn't get a deer this year, only saw 6 and I hunted a lot. The only buck I saw was a small yearling 4 point on Childrens Weekend. The deer are there. I know they're there because I see a lot of tracks, rubs, and scrapes. This year the deer went nocturnal after the first shot and into non hunted lands and areas.

I blame the weather and my lack of hunting skills. I'm used to hunting corn feeders and wheat. In other words, food. We had an unusually wet summer that created a massive acorn drop. Then we had a 3 month drought in the Fall that eliminated my wheat patches. Given a choice, deer will eat natural browse and acorns. Cereal grain plants and corn really are unnatural to them.

I've always left the biggest part of my place as a sanctuary and kinda stay away from those areas that generally hold deer. I've waited for them to come out to places that were convenient to me. Obviously that didn't work real well this year. After the season I went into the areas that I usually stay away from and found the tracks, rubs and scrapes. This Spring I'm going to build some simple wood tree stands in deer holding areas. I'm also going to clear some lanes that I can use to sneak into and out of those places.

This old dog needs to learn some new tricks.

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP
