How many of yall on this forum can honestly say they hunt for food?? 100% no B.S..... hunt to provide for their families, weather from necessity or a matter of pride? I can honstly say that there has not been store bought meat other than chicken, or maybe a take home box from a resturant in my house in over 5 years. My 17 year old daughter will go out to eat with her friends and get a burger or whatever and say it dosnt taste right. How many others do this or try to do this as a matter of pride like I do? I am not a rich man but I COULD go buy meat if I had to, but would feel like a wus if I HAD to..... am I the only one??? And no, I wont get lonely if I am

you are not alone. the only meat we eat is deer, hog, and exotics. its way better than beef. it would be cheaper to buy beef!

It's certainly not the only reason I hunt, but with few exceptions I do not kill something unless I intend to eat it. We get free beef at my house so game is not all we eat.

i don't have anyone else to provide for but i have a deep freezer full of wild game including lots of fish I've taken. I don't buy meat from the store for pride of the animals I've harvested, health reasons, and because the animals i have harvested only have one bad day in their lives.......the day they enter my freezer. The animals that have been butchered for mass production live in un-sanitary confined conditions (for the most part). every day is a bad day for them. However, I do buy chickens from a friend that has a free-range organic farm.

Kudos to those of you who chose to subside on what you catch or kill.
Not me. My wife and son will not eat wild game. (My son is only 6, so he's influenced by mom). I have finally convinced them to come down to Laredo with me for just the day to see the lease and our camp.
For me, what game I take game wise is but one souvenier of my time and experience enjoying the great outdoors.

I do not remember the last time I brought a Steak or burger to the house to cook. I do enjoy a beef steat on ocassion but not very often. We talk about the price of our wild game and it is expensive but not quite as bad if you compare it to Organic food. Plus there is the pride of eating game you harvested and the entertainment value of hunting.

I hunt because it is a passion and I couldn't imagine not doing it. I eat what I kill. I never needed the meat. I definatly enjoy eating it. The last two years my wife has been getting on a healthy meat kick. We buy the back end of a fresh cow that is slaughtered and cut up by a meat market. All the meat in stores is crap and full of junk. I have convinced her of how clean and pure the meat is I take from the lease and we are eating more and more. The lease I got this year has hogs so that is new to us and very tasty. So to answer your question, in the beginning no. Now we are trying to eat fresh, pure meat and wild game sure fills that ticket so we are definetly coming around.

That's how I grew up. We ate from our garden, the chicken coop, and the freezer. The power would always go out so my parents resorted back to canning the meat along with the vegetables. I still can my deer meat. I ate a deer in 2003 that I had shot in 1996.
Now I plan to eat the deer meat to save money and lose weight. Nowadays people like to spend a lot of money at Whole Foods and on "organic" (I hate that word) food. It's just real food that's all. I like having the option of either eating deer meat or having the occasional Whataburger. I'd like to get back to my roots and eat from my garden, chicken coop, and freezer more often. Of course I trophy hunt, but I see doe's as food. I see deer steaks and jerky running through the woods. It's almost like when cartoon characters are stuck on a deserted island and they see their shipmates as dinner.

Never buy anything other than chicken. We eat 3 or 4 deer a year and run out long before season rolls around. Can i afford beef? Yep but would rather have venison over any cut of beef out there! My kids and wife all love venison. I hunt because i like to eat deer and hogs and guide part time on tawakoni so get all the fish i need too.

No, we grow that and harvest them too.

My family and I live off of deer meat not because we have to but because we want to.

I can't say that I ONLY eat game that I have shot, but we do eat alot. I usually have plenty of people that want what we don't have room for. I just wish my lease had Axis. I wouldn't buy any beef ever again.

I can't do that, we stop by Rosenthals and pick up cases of ribeyes & tbones. I like my venison fried and my fried food intake has been limited since '08, so I've found that I just don't eat much wild game anymore. I make sure I keep the inlaw's freezer full of catfish, and every time we go in we'll have fried fish, baked beans & hushpuppies.
How I hunt shows that change..I'm really not as interested in shooting quantity anymore.

We eat at least 4 deer per year, so we depend on it. With hogs no problem as well, we don't buy much meat at the store.

I would say about 90% of it is for the meat 10% of it is for the fun. My family eats EVERY bit of what I harvest. On what would be a bad note to some, When processing my animal I always do 100% of it in ground meat. Yes people argue that the backstrap and tenderloins are the best part of there animal. Me personally have never been able to cook a deer steak to where I like it enough to save that part as a steak rather than burger meat. Being that I DO NOT waste my animal this is why I choose to do 100% in ground. As soon as that meat hits the freezer we do not buy beef ground at all until we run out. My wife and kids rely on that meat.

Combination of both. Ate dove last night. Honestly, between dove and crappie I couldn't care less if I ate anything else.

I don't & won't catch/kill or even shoot at anything that I will not eat... except dangerous to me & mine kinds of critters.
If I could replace beef with Axis or Elk/Moose or possibly some other brands I would change over as much from pride as food value. We eat a LOT of chicken too and I'd prolly set up a hen house too if we had the space. Ron

60% of the meat we eat is venison, 20% is chicken. Balance is fish & pork & beef.

We eat everything we kill, but still buy some stuff at the store to. Mainly chicken and steaks. About the only hamburger we use is deer burger. And we buy some pork too, I will eat wild hog and so will my sons, but my wife absolutely refuses LOL.
