We shot a pig last night and couldn't find it. He only went twenty yds into the brush and crashed hard I know he dead. Brush was too thick to find him at night. If I find him by noon u think meat is ok? It was a big boar. Weather has been 50 deg all night and shot him around 10pm

i will eat boars without hesitation, but i think fifty degrees is too warm for the meat to stay good. hopefully you can go get another one.

Depending on the size and your classification of Big Boar, only the straps and the hams would be worth eating, but if it sat out all night in 50 degree weather I would not even eat those.

Unfortunately, here in Texas we dont usually have the luxury of allowing an animal to wait til morning to track it down simply because the weather is not cold enough to allow this. This is just a creul reminder that if you plan to eat what you shoot, you better be able to get to it right away after it dies or you should write it off and try again. Thanks goodness there are plenty of hogs around.

Why is it that some will eat boars and some will not? I've heard all kinds of reasons......it smells terrible, meat is tough, it's hormones taints the meat, etc......

What's the deal?

Does size matter, lol? Seriously, does it?

I've never noticed any meat ive eaten from a boar tasting bad.....of course I like a lot of meat most don't.....crane, duck, and gar to name a few.

We are eating on a big boar now. I ground up most of it for burger and made a few backstrap roasts and a big ham. The taste is just fine. HOWEVER, for the first time ever, my wife says that it has a bad smell as its cooking. She says it smells like the hog head I boiled when I was euro mounting it. Apparently its not a horrible smell as she still cooks it, but she definitly notices it. Like I said, it still taste fine though and smells fine once cooked. Never noticed anything with any of the others we have eaten.

I think it has more to do with their diet than anything else. I have killed a few large boars 240+ lb that were good eating and some that were not. I have also has amaller one was a 80lb sow that was not fit for human consumoption IMO. One that one of the gurst hunters killed several years ago smelled a little strong and I would not have cut it up but they wanted it. Later they said that it tasted ok but the house stunk like a hog pen when cooking it.

I may be wrong on my thoughts but if a hog has been scavenging on carcuses and rank gut piles cheances are it will not taste as good as one that has been primarily feeding on grain and vegitation. I killed a beaver a few years ago that was in a pine plantation it smelled like turpentine after getting the hide off of it.

Dont know the reason they say not fit to eat,Have ate alot of hogs through the last 15 years and never had a bad one.Maybe the way they clean them or not letting the bleed out on ice for a couple days.Who knows?????I hang mine up and spray off and skin and cut legs off,then head and skin.Wash again and clean knife and gut ,wash again and make sure you get the little marble gray glands out.Let set in ice.Yum.

i heard there is a "gland" of some kind that you can accidently cut that might possibly taint the meat and could smell really bad. guess i've been lucky. never had that problem but if that is possible i'd like to know how to avoid that from happening.....

kingranch called this a pig. Said nothing about a big boar. I agree, at 50 degrees overnight, I would not eat any of it. IMO, BIG BOARS are not fit to eat. They stink and it has to do with the testicles. I have some friends who trap. When they capture mature boars, they castrate and release them. When they catch them again afrer the surgery has completely healed, they usually eat just fine.

Honestly its just a pig, if it was left overnight, I'd say better luck next time..wouldnt chance it. We have eaten some big boars that tasted great w/ no smell. So I cant agree with the "dont eat boars" mentality. It just all depends on the pig. I have shot some eating sized sows that stank worse then a big nasty ole boar.

When a boar smells, its from is pizzing & excreting on himself to either be what a sow wants or to put up a front to other boars.

The smell is on the outside as long as you dont touch the inside with knife or what ever has touched the outside its good to go if clean right.

I once worked on a farm that had a swine operation. I know for a fact, domestic hogs will eat their own feces.
Most of the wild hogs I have cooked over the past 20 years have been fine.
A couple of old boars were tough and gamey, no big deal to me.
But there was one, that was just bad.
He had been prepared carefully from the field.
I stuck a ham in the oven, and a couple hours later, our entire house smelled like an outhouse.
Can't know for sure, but it reminded me of the times I had seen hogs eating their own caca in the past.
Threw it away along with the rest of the carcass.

I have had some sausage off an old domestic boar that was unedible. Never had a bad wild boar or sow though. Some stink, some don't, but the meat all tasted the same. They adults may be a bit tough and need some tenderizing, but the meat tasted fine.

I think it all comes down to what you consider good tasting. I like dove and duck, and think venison tastes fine. Not that much different from beef to me. I know people that think venison is barely edible and far too gamey to enjoy. I gave some 100 lb hogs to a coworker at Christmas, and he said he could taste the gamey flavor in them. He's a lot more sensitive to the flavor than me.

Those that think that duck or venison needs to marinated overnight and/or kept on ice for several days until the water runs clear obviously don't like the taste of game much. In my experience, it's this type that says large hogs are unedible.
