I had this question about layering your clothes for deer hunting. My whole family hunts and has been hunting as far as my 2nd great grandfather as far as I know but they always go cheap with their clothes and basically that means that they get four layers of sweat pants and sweat shirts and maybe some blue jeans with camo over all of that. The only problem is that it is bulky and after awhile you get cold anyway. I don't know a lick about good quality hunting clothes and layering.

I was just looking around and I was wondering what you have and what works for you. I have looked at Arctic Sheild H4 pants and H3.1 parka, does anybody know about that or know anything better?

Thanks for any comments.

If you are buying with price in mind i would look at academys game winner camo. It is what i went with this year and have really liked it.

When it gets below 35 degrees i put a layer of the game winner scent blocker tops and bottoms, then a pair of polar ice compression theramls, A pair of the game winer camo pants (thin, not blue jean style), and a pair of redhead bibs(just bottoms). To finish the upper body layer i have a game winner fleece pull over and a huddie. all of these layers are very thin so you are free to move around and are also not weighted down. Also remember to me the most important thing in keeping warm is your feet and head. When its cold i have a good pair of thick socks and good boots, and a full face mask that can handle the cold.

Damart bottoms and shirt to start. Those will set you back about a hundred bucks but are a bargain to me. Mine are 20+ years old and have traveled to a lot of really cold hunting spots. Then jeans, shirt and coveralls. GOOD winter boots and socks are a must. I've been known to cover my boots with leaves for added insulation. They still get cod. I've also learned to wear a long tailed Carhart vest that goes over the lower back when it gets really cold.

When sitting, I use a butt warmer pad. I wear thin (cheap) cotton gloves and stick them in a muff. A reasonably warm face mask completes it.

I have learned to not wear underwear. When nature calls, it is just one more obstacle.

i like thin, quiet waterproof outer gear that is oversize. i then can add according to the temperature: thick jacket, insulated pants, waterproof insulated golves and head gear (a must) etc...

to me, my head, feet and hands got the coldest.

I don't like to shell out $400 for a hunting coat but I will not hesitate to invest in good boots and socks. It can make a world of difference over cheap big-box store boots.

good long underwear and warm boots are a must when it's cold out. The is from someone who hunted many years in Minnesota. From there maybe a hooded sweatshirt with a decent coat over that.. Elmer Fudd hat is nice too.

Two words: merino wool. Cotton is terrible in cold weather, and the synthetics can't insulate like wool once they get wet (from sweat or precipitation). I wear wool socks, long johns, shirts, and gloves. If you only pick one of those, make sure you get the merino wool socks. Make sure it's either 100% wool or a very high blend.

Regular shirt and jeans with a hunting coat of some sorts...hey it is South Texas and usually ain't that cold...but when it does I use under armour as a base layer and Cabelas Windshear Berber Fleece top and bottom and it works fine for me. Boots I use Danner Pronghorn boots and wool socks. Also a Fleece Balaclava works wonders to keep the heat in your upperbody.

I start with under- armour as base layer. 2nd layer is wool thermals. The same with socks. My pants are a heavy fleece type material. I wear a heavy wool military style sweater on top. Bibs are Artic- Shield H7,jacket is a Artic-Shield H3. New Years Day I hunted in my ladder stand at 11 degrees.

It's been getting down to the 20's where I hunt in Ga. I wear regular long johns, UA cold gear (top & bottom), camo pants, long sleeve shirt, fleece sweat shirt, insulated bib, insulated parka. If the wind is not blowing and temp stays around 40, I skip the bib and the parka and wear an insulated jumpsuit. 1000 gram boots, gloves, and a full cover mask or a wool cap. But no matter what the temp reads and what I wear it sure feels a lot colder just before the sun comes up.

I hunt in east Texas and the wet muddy bottoms of Mississippi. So three layers seem to work best for me.
Knock off thin under armor type bottoms and top
Knock off fleece bottom and top
Artic Shield pants and jacket
neck Gator with full fleece hat that covers my ears and fleece gloves with texture on the grip side of the glove.
Thick Wood Socks with Gortex 8" boots (waterproof)

This combo allows me to walk, crawl climb with full backpack and gun with out issues and is very quiet. BTW, with Artic Shield and the fleece I never walk in with my jacket on. TO HOT!

Drake Waterfowl has a great cold weather gear for low prices.

I have the LST Down coat and it's without a doubt the warmest jacket I've ever put on. they sell some other items too, but the down vest and jacket are the best I've worn.

If I would just buy better cold weather gear I wouldn't have to fill every pocket with those hot hands things.

Buy the good stuff the first time.

Not a deer hunter (yet......) but i've frozen my tail off standing watch in subzero temps on three continents.

Make sure your outer layer is a windblocking shell of some type (Goretex or anything that stops wind).

base layer, either Underarmor Coldgear (yes, it IS that good) or something similar, merino wool is an excellent suggestion. I used to wear a basic uniform t-shirt with a merino wool layer over that then all my other stuff (uniform top, armor, etc) and was generally good unless it was below 30 F.

Add a midweight layer (sweatshirt, heavy button down shirt or anything fancier) and you're fine. The 2-3 layer system works down to below zero, make sure you cover your head (major heat loss is through your head and neck).

The biggest deal is trying to stay warm while sitting absolutely still when you're not in a blind. The right boots and socks seem to be extremely important to me and I don't know what that would be.
