Below is the response I received from the IGLOO corporation, after I'd written them about a 5 day cooler I had purchased that held ice for less than one day indoors. Below it is also my final reply to them. Basically, they are not standing behind their products at all. You decide if you want to buy their crappy products, but I won't ever again.

>Subject: RE: igloo maxcold 120 (Thread:836292)

>Dear "james davis" <james.davis8@verizon.net>,
>
>We thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are sorry that your 5-day cooler did not meet your ice retention performance expectation.
>
>Please note, as stated on the label, that this performance is measured "under controlled test conditions" and that "results may vary". The reason for this, as with any form of testing, is the test must be standardized
>and adhere to strict methodology in order to accurately and consistently measure results.
>
>Please note the following suggestions for optimum performance, which can also be found on our Igloo web site at http://www.igloocoolers.com/faqs/faq-topic/?topic=Igloo’s%20MaxCold%20Technology.
>
>- Store your ice chest in a room temperature or cooler environment for at least 12 hours prior to use
>
>- Chill items to be placed in the cooler for at least one hour prior to placing in the ice chest
>
>- Large cubed ice, blocks of ice, or freeze bottles are ideal for use
>
>- When in use the cooler should be kept in a shaded area when possible. Placement inside of a car trunk or on top of warmer surfaces will impede optimal performance.
>
>- Close cooler lid promptly after opening and keep lid closed when items are not being placed in, or being taken from the unit
>
>- Do not drain Chilled water from recently melted ice in the cooler as this actually results in more effective chilling of items in your cooler than simply ice alone.
>
>Igloo's 5-day, ice retention testing requires placing ice in the cooler, then placing that cooler in an oven at 90 degrees F. The test is complete once the inside cooler temperature reaches 34 degrees F.
>
>Again, we appreciate your feedback and will pass your comments along.
>
>Thank you,
>

Hello Jim,
I have to admit this is the response I hoped that I wouldn't get, but feared that I might. Customer Service is claimed by many and realiszed by few.

Based on the generic response of this email, which I presume to be prewritten for many complaints you likely receive on these products, not only will I not make another Igloo purchase ever again, but I will also post the results of this inquiry on several internet forums that I am a member of and let the court of public opinion decide on whether they want to buy your products. I also intend to contact our local news consumer investigators and see if they'd like to put these things to the test.

You're company's claims for the 5-day products borders on false advertising. At the very least, your requirements to meet the 5 day limit are beyond what a reasonable person would ever endure to keep their ice.

For what it is worth, the cooler had previously been in my pantry, in room temperature, the drinks were cold prior to entry into the cooler, and the lid was closed, and had you read my original email you would have seen that the ice melted less than 24 hours, actually more like 15 hours later, while being kept indoors. Whether or not the lid was defective, I really can't say, but that would be considered a manufacturing flaw if it were, which I shouldn't be at fault for.

At any rate, I won't be making an Igloo purchase again, and will do everything I can to steer anyone else away from making the same mistake that I did.

Former Customer,
James Davis

I have one. I will admit, it is a pile of crap. I was told by a buddy to shoot some insulation(spray can type) in between the walls of the chest. Drill small holes and fill em up. I don't know if this really works, and I am not sure if I want to try it. Oh well lesson learned.

I too have one and it will only keep ice for 2-3 days MAX. It is no better than my other standard Igloo's or Coleman coolers.

That gray one may be the best cooler ever. I have two, red and blue, and they routinely bring frozen fish and fresh shrimp packed in ice from Alabama home in two or three days in the heat of summer in the back of a FORD pu with a black campershell....

Best ones I ever saw bar none. Had a long four day trip home once, BILLY"S Seafood in Bon Secour Bay Alabama packed it in ice, and taped the living shtuff out of it with duct tape, I laughed, scallops were still frozen when I got home, shrimp was icey cold...no

Drank several icey ones from that gray cooler of rednecks at TMS and other places, its the bomb!

They've done better than any cooler I've ever had, in fact I bragged about how well they worked when I first got one. I bought them when they first came out, maybe they skimp on materials nowadays. You did remember to close the lid, right?

It all depends on how cold everything is when you put it in the cooler, how well it is packed and how often it is opened and closed. A cooler solidly packed with frozen items will last a lot longer than a cooler full of drinks that is opened and closed all day long. If you use block ice instead of the convenient crushed ice you will have a lot better luck.

There is no cooler that will keep ice if it is for drinks, every time you open it you are introducing warm air that just melts the ice faster. Also as the drinks are being removed you are adding more air space that has to be cooled each time it is opened.

Fill that cooler with frozen gallon jugs of water and keep it closed and see how long it lasts. Then do it again with only one gallon of frozen water and open it up once every hour and you will find that the one gallon ice jug will be water a lot quicker.

I used some dry ice last year in a 120 quart cooler full of ice and food. The dry ice kept the reguar ice from melting for about 3 days. The only problem was that everything else was frozen solid too!

My whole issue with this cooler wasn't so much that it was a pile of garbage, but that Igloo actually wants to lay the blame on me for not doing something right when it's either a faulty product or their claims are false. There is a big difference between 5days @ 90 degrees and less than one day at 75.

Had they offered me the chance to exhange this out for another one, I would have done it and this would have never been posted.

For those that have used dry ice, have you ever had a problem with it cracking your cooler?

I sell these coolers and you need to use solid blocks of ice. the walls are not what keep the cold in it wont help very much to fill the walls with foam. the lid is what makes the ice chest preform.

And if the cooler is opened and closed all day long the lid won't even help.

During the 5 day test they do not open and close that is not a factor they include. i bought one the other week and have used it twice and thought it did a good job. get old milk jugs and fill with water and freeze and they do a good job. i have learned all this in my training i am just passing on all the info that i was taught and i did not learn it from Igloo.
