Does anyone have a mut they use to hunt with?

I'm looking for a dog I can rescue and then train it to hunt with me. I have two lab mixes now and they are great dogs. I never trained them to hunt with me but they are natural cat, squirrel, opossum, and rabbit hunters.

I don't want to pY a bunch of money for bloodlines. Just want to rescue a pup and give it a good hunting life by my side. I hope others have had this experience.

Please share.

are you talking bird dogs only? I've got plenty of mixed breeds I hunt hogs with.

Yep, I have a 1/2 Brittany 1/2 pointer. He is not a covey finder, but he's probably the best retriever/dead bird finder that we have out of seven. He's the inside dog & spoiled by my wife & is a little..... well lets just call it "fluffy". Probably weighs in at #80 or so.

If the dog is smart and you put in the time, you can get a mutt to hunt. We had a Basset mix when I was a kid and she was a natural retriever.

However, if you do get a mutt, and the dog shows no interest in hunting, don't be too disappointed.

i don't hunt hogs with dogs. was looking for one that would be a good retriever for waterfowl.

i'll keep looking.

i'm sure part of it would depend on what kind of mutt. if it was a blue heeler/pekinese cross i wouldn't expect much. if it was a pointer/lab or whatever bird dogs you want to mix up maybe you'd have something to work with. hopefully some of the bird dog guys will chime in.

In the past I rescued two dogs from the pound. One was supposed to be a german sheppard, the other was supposed to be a lab. Well the german sheppard turned out to be a german sheppard-lab mix and the lab turned out to look exactly like a coonhound. I hunted everything with them. They weren't the best hunters, and I had no idea how to train, but the were great companions and they flushed plenty of quail and rabbits off of public land for me.

Are you talking about DNA testing on dogs? Because if you are, they have been shown to be highly inaccurate. Waste of money IMO.

I know people who have tried it. They knew the breed of their dog and only did the test out of curiosity. It came back all wrong.
