Now someone will come on and tell me why it's ok, and I am sure you are OK with your game warden, but it's a good idea to call ahead, "courtesy call".

assisted a grad student by spotlighting woodcocks in Alazan WMA near Nacogdoches. Prof. told him to call the GW prior to the count, but he didnt. Someone called the GW about our spotlighting while riding a 4-wheeler, GW came, was angry, said he knew it would be us but came anyway to chew our butts off. Said we should have called, he was busy that time of year and didnt need to waste his time to check if it was us. I think we spotted 6 male woodcocks doing their mating flight/dance. Pretty unique. Anyway, I would call just to give a heads up especially during hunting season

My guess - a county road is not private property - the regulations say it is ok to spotlight on private property. I think Vernon is making the point that this is a gray area and had the call been made to the game warden prior to spotlighting he probably wouldn't have gotten out of bed instead of showing up w/ a case of the reds and a mind to write a ticket.

He was caught shining a light, not with his rifle out his window aiming at the deer.

I won't use lights to hunt hogs during deer season, period.

outside of deer season, it's a good practice to call the local sheriff's office for the county.. That's what the game wardens I have spoken with told me to do...

Closed season and artifical light were the ones they paid; there were several other warnings; one of them had no license either and paid that one. He was an employee of the farmer and tried that but failed.
