A friend of mine decided this year to start his 16 yr. old son hunting. Went out and bought him a gun, sighted it in and turned him loose. He has "Missed" at least 10 deer so far. Another friend on the same place has gotten trail cam pics of deer with wounds and one with a foot shot off.

If someone is to ignorant to know the difference between a calf and a deer, and not verify what they are shooting at before pulling the trigger, they don't even need to be allowed to handle a gun, much less go hunting!

he's doing it wrong.

i do remember my first year of hunting and my BIL sat in the blind with me each time we went out. At the time I thought it was just to drink beer w/ me but i know he was teaching me what was shootable and what wasn't.

Don’t know the full details of the hunt, but I have seen animals 300+ yards away where I only saw part of the animal because it was covered in brush. I knew I could hit it, but I was patient enough to wait it out even at the risk of losing my shot op. Good thing too cause I would have shot several cows had I been trigger happy.

Just out of curiosity, where was the rich guy hunter from? Hard to believe anyone from Texas would not recognize a cow.

For the lighter side, an oldie but still good:

Rifleman, we have the grayer more black shade of deer. The calf was around this color, especially with the winter coat on him.

I went to school up in New England long ago. I remember a story in the local paper about some New Yorkers who had come up north to hunt "deer". They had never hunted before and may have never seen an animal before other than at the zoo.

There was a picture with the article that showed them with their kill. Tied on that car was a gutted jersey milk cow. The highway patrol had pulled them over at the Vermont-Mass border.

Wish I still had the story or at least the picture, but it was something to see. The roof of that car was almost caved in from the weight. I can't image how they got it up there or how messy it was to clean. Frankly, I was shocked they knew that they needed to clean it.

That second picture is the color more or less!

I'm not sure how you'd confuse it for one either, but hell... apparently it's possible.

I remember that story Kenny!!! I also seem to remember a joke I read on here about a blond that shot a "deer" and told a cowboy that it was her "deer" and the cowboy said "yes ma'am but can I take my saddle off first?" or something like that!!! rofl

My wife had a friend from college over one time for dinner at our place and we were eating something that had deer meat in it. Friend says- this is good. What kind of meat is this.

My wife says- deer meat from a deer my husband shot.

He got a real serious look on his face and said, "I didn't know you could get meat from a deer".

Sad but true. Some people need to get out more.

Damn that sucks! Sorry about the cow and the loss of the young 10pt. On my lease a few years back one of the guys brought a guest and set him in the blind by himself to shoot a doe. Long story short, the guest shot a 3.5 year old typical 12pt! He could have cared less about the horns and said that he had killed allot of bucks bigger than that, but he never killed a 12pt. He came back to camp and cut the head off but said he could use the meat! Needless to say he was never welcome back.

My dad always told me shooting a deer is like shooting a cow.

I rest my case.
