my dads looking for a gun safe. he said he wanted to look at sportsman steel safes this afternoon. i just googled them and read some pretty terrible stuff about them, seems there customer service is non existent. anyone ever done business with them? any better suggestions? he needs around a 40 gun safe. the one by sportsman steel he was looking at held like 12-28 long guns and a bunch of pistols.

Liberty would be my choice. I have one and love it.

The Cannons they sell at Academy are a pretty good buy too.

One thing I would stay away from is the digital combo stuff. I have that on a Winchester safe and have already had to replace it once.

While the digital safes are great for quick access, when I worked at academy the big Cannon safes they had behind the counter constantly seemed to have issues with their locks. We went with non-digital cannons and for the past few months they seem just fine.

there is a safe sold by costco called the bighorn. You should check it out. I think it's 1299 shipped. Now, you probably think that's alot----but read and do your research. This thing is 830lbs. Has thicker doors and sides. Read the reviews. Most of the other safes have bad doors or are a thin metal.

someone else recommended i look at the safes at costco. a nice safe at costco seems like an oxymoron though. im not that concerned with where its sold though, just the quality of the product. 1299 is definitely in my price range.

If you really need a 40 gun safe then you better buy a safe rated for 60 guns, if you have a lot of scoped bolt actions anyways. Delivery is a must for one of those big heavy suckers!

x3 on the Liberty. Also agree to stay away from the digital locks.

I have a Wincherster with the digital lock. I've had it 5 years, replaced the battery once and no problems at all.

Actually I don't know if the Bighorn 6039 is in the store. It comes direct from the manufacture to your house once you place the order. It is 10 gauge steel vs lessor. It has a 70 minute fire rating. Truthfully, if a guy has enough time--he can get in anything, but usually a typical thief does not carry a crowbar and tools.

I think any safe that has a quality name will be secure. Just get the one that you can afford that has the highest fire rating. The chances of your house burning down are greater than someone having enough time to break into the safe in your home or carry it out the door ! I have a Champion that had a problem with the combination and it would not open. It was under warranty so the Champion sent a lock smith out to drill it so I could get to my guns. It took him 6 hours of drilling with several drill bits to open it. I did get a new one delivered free no questions ask.

Anyone can own a fancy gun but can you shoot it ?

Have had a sportmans steel for several years. S&G combo lock. Like it. When I purchased it I compared fire rating, locking pins, and wall thickness, it was the best value back then.

I would do a Winchester safe. The only Texas company and located in Fort Worth. Any issues and they take care of them fast.

Something you'll want to look at also is to make sure the safe is water resistant.
A lot of people worry about the fire, and it's a valid concern, but they don't think about the thousands of gallons of water the fire department is going to hose your house down with. If your safe isn't water proof, say good bye to anything in your safe that itself isn't water proof.

anyone heard of amsec safes? a guy on another forum recommended i look into them.

he would prefer something made here in the US, but hes more concerned about the quality of the product. you can just feel the difference in the ones made in china and the ones made in the US when you swing the door open. they dont feel nearly as heavy duty. i think were going to a fort knox dealer tomorrow.
