I had guys tell me not to put protein pellets in a spin feeder but I have also had guys tell me they have never had a problem feeding a corn protein pellet mix in there spin feeders, so which is true ? I have a gravity protein feeder but was thinking of mixing corn and protein in the spin feeders as well from late Feb. to July or so.

I have fed corn and protein from the same feeders individually and have mixed them together. No issues. The issue will come in if water gets into the barrel and the protein swells up.

You shouldn't have any trouble as long as the gap is opened enough to spin the protein. We have separate feeders, one for corn and one for protein because of the infestation of pigs on our property.

Depending upon the brand of protein, if you spin cast protein only, you will run the risk of the pellets swelling and thereby clogging your feeder. While rain is the main culprit, heavy dew will cause the pellets to absorb the moisture.
But typically. as dry as it has been around the state, you may not have any problems. If you feed protein year round like you should be, you probably need to clean the feeder at least twice/year to keep any residue from building up.
Your best bet is to run a mixture of corn/protein. Run 75/25 protein to corn in the spring and gradually alter the mixture to about 50/50 by the time deer season starts.

I just don't think it's worth the time and effort, there's not enough feed dispensed from spin feeders to accomplish much. All that said, I would use a corn soybean mix for spin feeders...even dry protein will bridge and cause clogs.

I have the answer (of course), moisure is the problem as the others have stated. Years ago I had the same problems when mixing protein and corn and I hate dumping a full barrel of feed. The reason I found out was the lid I was using. I was using a lid that fit firmly and a cam action lock ring. Five years ago I got on another lease and a member was mixing corn and protein. I told him that he was going to have problems, well he didn't and had been doing it for five years. The difference was he was using a galvanized metal lid that hung down about 3" thus and condensation was not traped. He still does it with great success. I hope this helps.

One of our hunters has been running a mix, 1 bag protien /6 bags corn for 5 or 6 years. He hasn't had "much" trouble... the first issue was ocassionally prot. would get a little wet and swell, so he started buying "water proof" prot. . Then he got a brand that the pellets were too long and they clogged it some. Overall he has had probably 90% sucess, we've had about as much problems as we had before with corn cobb or corn stalk in the feeders.

Will deer eat corn from both a spin feeder and protein from a gravity feeder if placed at the same location?

Will deer eat corn from both a spin feeder and protein from a gravity feeder if placed at the same location? I have a gravity protein feeder and a spincast corn feeder along with several deer blocks all in the same pen. They will go from one to the other and eat it all.
