I would strongly suggest investing in a rifle!!! An inexpensive .243 or a scoped 30/30 will do ya just fine!!! Good luck!!!

We are going to attempt taking a buck or hog this weekend with a 12ga with rifled slug for my nephew... He put 3 slugs in a 4 inch circle at 30 yards open sights... I have confidence that he can do it!!

If you are shooting slugs be sure to pattern them before you go.

Buckshot is devastating out to about 40 yards. Maybe a little closer on big hogs.

Make sure you not to shoot slugs out of a rifled barrel, rifled shotgun barrels are made for sabots only.

where i use to hunt it was either shotgun only or was strongly recommended to only use shotguns. Ive killed my first few deer with 20ga slugs out of a smooth bore rem 870. ALL dropped where they stood. The furthest one was 75yds. I have even killed 1 buck at 110yds with 12ga smooth bore. I would say if you buy quality slugs and practice with them then even out of a smooth bore you should be good out to 100yds IF you have to. However, I would recommend staying under 80yds. there is plenty of power in those slugs so its more about accuracy and bullet drop.

No sir, you have it backwards. Sabot slugs should only be used in rifled barrels and not smoothbores. Regular lead slugs (including the "rifled" ones) are just fine also for rifled barrels. For smoothbore barrels, use only lead slugs (including the "rifled" ones). Remember that rifled slug gun barrels have been arround years before the sabot type slugs.

Wanted to add my recommendation for slugs. Assuming you are using a smooth bore. These where my favorite, but you should look through all their products to find the one the best fits you, your gun and scenario.

Brenneke slugs.

I don't know about the large retailers like bass pro and cabelas, but back when I was hunting with slugs these were hard to find.

I've been hunting with a 20 guage slug gun rifled barrel single shot now for two seasons and I hunt hogs with it during the off season and it's by necessity as the landowner only allow shotguns and bows because of nearby farm houses.

I've so far in two seasons taken five deer with the longest shot being 95 paces and the furthest any of them went was forty yards with a massive blood trail.

I shoot 3" Remington Buckhammers which is made for rifled barrels but it's not what would be considered a sabot load as the lead slug actually touches the rifling and it has a plastic stabilizer attached to the rear of the slug that stays on the slug in flight to help stabilize it, and it flat shoots and I can group cloverleafs at 100 yards.

I've got as much confidence in that slug gun as I do with my rifle, but I will probably not shoot over 150 yards as the 1 0z. slug will drop considerably past that range.

I've shot full grown hogs and piglets out to 75 yards and ear hole them dropping them in their tracks.

Slugs out of a shotgun are deadly and even out of a smoothbore they will get the job done out to practical shotgun range which is anywhere from 75 to 100 yards.

Find the right ammo that your gun likes and grouping inside of 3" is possible with a smoothbore at 60 yards.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I have a H and R fully rifled barrel 12g that will put the Ultra bonded core sabots in about 1 and half inch group at hundred yards. It has been used on 9 deer and none have left there tracks most were shot between 75 and 100 yards but I shot one at 187 yards. I would not push a smooth bore past 75

scratch I think you misunderstood me, thats exactly the same thing I was saying. As far as shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel, you can do it but I would not recommend it, and I've had a gun smith tell me the same. Those raised grooves on a rifled slug run clockwise, a barrels rifling runs anti-clockwise, you will have better accuracy out of a smooth bore. And contrary to popular belief those rifling marks on a slug are not so much to spin the bullet out of the muzzle, rather those raised grooves purpose is allow the lead to compress as is squeazes out to the choke end of the barrel, so you don't end up getting a barrel that looks like this.

Take a serious look at Hastings rifled slug barrels and slugs.
Pricey, but the combination is a serious contender out to 200 yards.

I have a Mossberg 695 rifled slug gun and it's very accurate. I've killed deer over 100 yards with it and it wasn't luck.

I know the kill instantly at 20yrds! I rattled up a 130" 8pt and my brother in law blasted it. Pics coming soon.

50cal sabot Winchester ballistic tip at 2100fps

1 1/2" groups out of Mossberg rifled barrel at 100yrds.
