Going elk hunting in sept and thinking of muzzy 4 blade broadheads and just like some opinions on em or suggestions on dirrerent brands. Never went elk hunting so dont know if same heads will work just as good. been using satelites for deer and hogs and havent had any problems but they dont weigh 800lbs either!

Hey Hal, I'm not changing a thing from my whitetail set-up. After doing a lot of research, and asking a lot of people that hunt Elk regularly, I found out that I'm shooting a heavier arrow than most of them do. And everyone I've spoken with uses fixed blade heads for Elk. I'm using NAP Thunderheads myself. Always had good luck from them on Pigs and Deer. Hopefully we'll both get to find out how our gear rates when it comes to bringing down an Elk.

If you're throwing 50+lbs of Kinectic Energy with a razor sharp broadhead you will be fine. Everything above that is showing off.

I have been talking to a few people over the past few weeks about broadheads. I hear all the time people say that one broadhead is better than the other for one reason or another, but there is one thing that everyone should agree on...... SHARP. It has to be razor sharp. I dont think that there will be too much of a change in the way a broadhead will make an arrow fly out to 20-30 yards. Some....but not much. But if it is not sharp....and I mean shave your hair sharp, you dont have the right one on your arrow. If you rake a broadhead across your arm and do not began to cut the skin with little to no pressure.....It is not sharp enough. A dull broad head....and when I say dull I mean not shave your arm sharp, will simply push vitals out of the way and not cut them as they need to. 85g,100g,125g.... take your pick...but make it sharp. Easy to follow the blood trail, and much more humane. JMO.

There was a test in Eastmans a couple of issues ago that compared all the popular broadheads. I can't remember who won, I will look for it.
I have only shot a calf and I used muzzy 3 blade 100gr. It went in and out. She was about 250 pounds.
Just don't hit the shoulder.

I'm elk hunting in Sept also...I just bought 100gr Montec's. They're a one piece broadhead. I bought them because they also sell a "pre-season" field point that is exactly the same (but not sharpened) that I use for practice. I like the one piece as I believe it is stronger and easy to re-sharpen.

If you're going for elk the 20 to 30 range thing is possible but I can tell you from experience you had best be ready for at least 40 yard shots. I regularly practice out to 50 yards although the only time I have shot over 30 yards at a whitetail was a wounded deer I was trying to put down. (not wounded by me fortunately) I hunted hard for 10 days and had three shots at legal bulls and 2 were at 40 and 43 yards. Both shots broad side with them clueless of my presence, but passed the shot because of what I limit whitetail shots to. Bad move. Elk have a big kill zone and my set up could have done the trick. I won't make that mistake again. Practice and be prepared for longer shots. If you get a close one great. It is an expensive tag to chew on for a few years before you get back up there though if you have a shot you have to pass because you can't handle it even though your set up can. Dang I wish I was going up there this year.

From what I understand, a 4 blade broadhead is more likely to affect point of impact vs. a field point. I have only seen one person shooting them before, and it seemed to cause a big shift, but I'm no expert. Just my $.02.

I disagree that a 4 blade head will be more likely to effect point of impact vs. a field point. A slick trick will fly as good as any head on the market out of an untuned bow. Shoot that thing out of a tuned bow, and you are guaranteed to hit the 12 ring(that is if that is where the pin is settled at realease) hahaha Same thing with a Wasp Boss 4 blade or an MX4.
It's not how far a shot, it's how close you got.

I have been practicing at 50 and 60yds and can keep it in a 12in circle so i think i will be O.K. but who knows when the time comes! I just hope i dont screw up and wound one. There are so many good broadheads out there its hard to choose one over the other, but one thing for sure i want a fixed blade and a quality one.

I found the article. It was in Eastmans March April issue. They tested 12 of the most popular broadheads on construction, weight, accuracy, wound channel, strength & durability, and penetration. They have a description of all the tests. Basically the best rated broadheads(of those tested) were the Montec 100, Shuttle T-Lock 100, and the Rocky Mountain Turbo 100 in no order. I have the article if you have questions.

Buy the 4 bladed Slick Trick and do not worry about anything. I have shot them for the past 3 years and they shoot just like my field points. Awesome broadhead, I have shot 10 deer, hogs, and 5 turkey with them. All pass throughs but one hog. Give them a try.

G5 Striker broadheads. Fly great and very, very sharp. Make sure you use a good arrow like the Easton Axis 400 or Axis Full Metal Jacket 400.

Or look at Eastons spine chart and see which spine arrow is a correct fit for one's setup? Maybe 400, maybe 340, maybe even 500.
That 4 blade muzzy should do the trick just fine.

I use Muzzy 3 blades and have shot a couple of hogs with complete passthroughs. I can't imagine Elk being much tougher, although much larger. Also Muzzy has practice blades that fly just like the regular ones, I suggest practicing with them instead of your hunting blades, jmo. Good luck on the hunt, take some pics so we can all see your experiences, since we can't go along.
Hunting is more to me than Antlers on the wall. It's more about the memories you make, and sharing those memories with friends, and family.
