I've got some questions about the 17 HMR since I've never owned one.
I've got several .22's and my question is this!...Does the 17 richocet like the .22's?
I've seen some tests done on you tube where they compare the .22 and the .17 shooting into a block of clay and the .17 fragments when it hits a target and all it's energy goes into the target, unlike the .22 where it passes through.
There is nothing worse than to hear the whine of a richocet as you shoot and I've even had .22 bullets bounce back toward me and hit nearby.
The main reason is I want to use it for predator and pest control in an area that has some farm houses not but a few hundred yards away and I don't want to shoot and have bullets whizzing through the air that bounce off rocks and stumps, and the 17 seems to be a practical solution.
It only makes sense that the light bullet coupled with high speed would tend to allow the bullet to vaporize once it hit the intended target would it not?
Has anyone who has a 17 ever heard the bullets whinning through the air while target practicing similar to shooting a .22 round? That will determine whether I decide to get one or not!

Actually because of the higher speeds, I would think a .17HMR would ricochet farther than a .22. I love mine, but would be very, very careful shooting around houses. Personnaly I wouldn't shoot any rifle, rimfire or not that close to other peoples houses.
Have you considered using .22 shorts? Or ratshot?

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.

Really depends on the bullets from what I've seen. Get some ballistic tips or hollow points. They fracture pretty good.

If you have never believed in wind drift, you will now. I have one and a piss of wind will take this lil round. Still like it, but truth is truth

Those Hornady varmint express sound like the ticket.
I know about shooting around houses, but this is a creekbottom with heavy brush and the ranch houses are about 400 yards away and I won't be shooting anywhere in that direction, but what I want to eliminate is the possiblility of a round singing off in unknown directions from being deflected, and the .22 short is probably the worse.
The sound of a gunshot isn't what bothers people so much but it's the sound of a whinning richochet that does, and it doesn't matter if you are shooting a safe direction or not but just the sound is a little unsettling.
A slow moving bullet such as a .22 is the worst and will glance off faster than a fast bullet, and at 20 grains at the speed it will be traveling there shouldn't be much left to glance off if you hit anything.
If anyone who has actually shot both should know what I'm talking about, and that is what I want to hear.
I've just about got myself talked into it!

watch all my 17 hmr videos below I don't have a single one richochet.
I honestly think the bullet it so light it folds the second it impacts. will it/can it bounce to another zip code? Of course. But my experience thus far says no...
They are very fragile in the wind but spend some time behind the gun and you'll learn to love it! Especially seeing the point of impact through the scope is AWESOME!

Shooting any gun with a concrete backround is a bad idea no matter what caliber. Like Head shot said you have to shot safely.

Anyone ever heard of a Calhoun .19? I inherited one and just started using it, pretty impressed so far.

Rocks, bricks, steel ,etc. bullets dont ricochet off of squirrels. Like some one else posted shooting around houses is a bad idea also. If your hearing bullets fly passed you when you shoot you are doing some thing wrong. Stay safe
