is a 50# recurve bow enough bow for hogs? (bow specs claim •Arrow Speed: about 225 to 250 FPS) i saw a video posted on here(i think) of a guy that shot a boar that was already dead in the shoulder with a compound bow to prove how tough they are and the arrow barely penetrated. edit found the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ1Mg0a7Tpw&playnext=1&list=PLBF550BD323224515&index=46

might have been more a broadhead or tuning problem than a bow speed problem. my old compound is not much faster than what you've posted and it works fine. just pick a shot that you're comfortable with and go get em. my favorite shot is quartering away right above the elbow because a hog's vitals are farther forward than a deer, kinda between the shoulders instead of behind. i think if you use a RAZOR sharp cut on contact broadhead and a pretty heavy arrow you will be fine.

As stated, go for a quartering away shot. It's hard to penetrate the shoulder plate/armor with any bow on a big hog. Personally, I prefer fixed, 2 blade points without the bleeder inserts. Penetration is the key. A thin 2 blade point is more likely to slip between ribs. On the down side, you may not get much of a blood trail since their fat seals the hole pretty quick.
If you keep your shot to pigs around 80 pounds or less, you won't have much trouble with the plate.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

As long as you have a sturdy arrow with a high FOC (Alaskan) and a bad [censored] broadhead (Silver flame, Massai, Ashby, Nanook,Samuri) You will be fine. Just make sure you make a good shot. Here is a link for more info on the products that I have listed in regards to hog hunting. http://www.alaskabowhunting.com/Hogs-W35.aspx

Agree with what everyone said above! My personal experience with recurve and longbow for hogs is A. Heavy arrows B. Two blade cut on contact broadheads C. angle forward off the elbow of the shoulder because if you shoot a hog in the same place that a double lung deer shot would be it will be a gut shot! What kinda recurve you shooting that gets 225 to 250 fps? Thats smoking for traditional bows!!!! Good luck!!

Good luck on the hog hunt! just about talked myself out of trying the recurve on the hogs. i've always shot a compound, but i really enjoy shooting a recurve. i'd really hate to just wound one.

There not a recurvr but longbows 1st one is a Timberspirit 62lb shooting goldtips with 125g bear 2 blades at around 195fps (chronograph) 2nd one Striker 56lbs shooting cedar with 125lb bear 2 blades at 165fps (chronograph)
I have taken a lot of hogs with these two bows Like every one says its shot placement the quartering away low in the chest Your set up will do just fine on hogs

I think you should try it out. The only thing you need to worry about is shot placement and that is regardless of whether you are shooting compound or traditional.
