Why is it when someone shoots a deer that isn't very big that they always preface the story with........"He's not the biggest i've seen but i'm happy with him......or he's bigger then anything else i've seen so i'm happy with him"?

Have you ever noticed this? when someone shoots a monster you don't hear them saying things like this. They say check out my deer and are obviously proud of it.

Only when someone shoots something small do they try to sell themselves on it?

I guess my question is, if you chose to shoot it then shouldn't you be proud of it regardless?

i was looking through the picture section and there are quite a few that say things like this. my point is, if you have to preface the picture with "he's not that old or big...but i'm happy with him"......are you happy with him?

The bucks that i have shot for the last 3 years i don't remember having to sell myself on them after the fact.

I think people are proud of thier deer or they wouldnt post the pics, they just know if they dont preface it with something like that then someones going to pop off and say "Did you shoot him off his mommas t**" or "You should have wiped the milk off his lips before you took the pictures".

What about those are showing their buck and who always say, "you can't eat the horns" even if nobody says anything?

Does that mean they feel guilty because they shot a buck that they know everyone will criticise?

Or when everyone is standing around wondering how old the buck was, and then the lone guy that always puts his two cents into the conversation and says, "just think what he would have been a year or two from now!"

How about, "nice deer!" What does that mean anyway?

Thats exactly why i wont post a pic of any deer here because theres always some a CLOWN that will belittle someone on what they killed! Momma always said if ya cant say anything nice, dont say anything and momma is always right.[ unless you dont live with her]

I shoot little deer. When I kill a deer I do it on more of a "Do I really feel like messing with one today" kinda feeling. Not "Thats too small of a rack", ect.....

And I dont give a damn what anyone on the internet has to say about it, because I don't know you and I dont need to know you. Just saying..........

"Nice deer" is usually followed by unaudible mumbling and grumbling as the other hunters on the lease walk away shaking their heads.

But you also have to know that a big deer means different things to different people in different situations and places.

The biggest deer I have ever shot is smaller than most of the culls alot of people on here shoot every year. It was a 5.5 to 6.5 main frame 8 with mule deer forks to make a 10. I have posted pics before and preface it with the exact quote this topic is about and in no way shape or form am I in the least ashamed about shooting the biggest and most mature deer that has come off of that place since the 1920's. Not all of us hunt on 5K acres high or low fenced and it is unreasonable to expect that we will have shot at what others may consider a "big deer".

My biggest deer scored 126 gross b&c and is absolutely a trophy to me... I shot him 8 years ago and still dont regret it one bit... but he aint squat to alot of people.

I think some people might feel the need to justify it, but I sure don't. I have, however, made the same statement....."He's not the biggest, but...." but it's certainly no apology or a feeling of guilt. It's more of me telling someone that I realize there are larger deer in the woods, but this one made me happy. A good example is a 5.5 plus year old buck I passed on last weekend. While he was a mature deer, he would not score very well at all. He had heavy main beams that went almost straight up, and his G1,2, and 3s were short but webbed. While he's not the biggest antlered buck, I find him to be a very cool looking buck. Since passing him, I have regretted it and plan to pile him up the next time I see him.
