Saw some very small ducks this morning, they were about teal sized. they were black with a white breast and a white stripe on either side of their head. Can anyone tell me what they are?

Maybe wood ducks, they fly similar and usually right at daybreak making them hard to ID. That would be my best guess without seeing them.

Ruddys perhaps. In Texas the drakes will not look like the typical pictures online. Both hens, drakes, and juvie will look about the same this time of year. Dark with a line on the side of the head. Buffleheads?

Sounds like Buffleheads or Hooded Mergansers.

Sawbill = Hoodie
Bill = Buffie

Better describe this and I think we could narrow it down.

Sounds like a bufflehead to me

Bufflehead is the first thing that comes to mind.

of all the pics i can find it doesnt look like a bufflehead. and doesnt have the big bill like a ruddy, it is a very small duck. the stripe is almost in a teardrop shape below the eye running to the back of the head.

The duck on the front bottom is a Buffie. The one above it that doesn't show detail very well in the pic is a Hooded Merganser.

There some kind of divers I shot one a couple days ago at the coast.I have seen it in a magizine a while back.there tiny ducks and the don't fly much.I had shot one and the other 6 or so flew about ten feet then sat down even as I went to get the other one.I went and got it and all they did was just swim away ..but I'm not sure what to call it exactly.diver I guess?the second and third day there I didn't even shot at those little ducks.

thanks guys it was definitely a juvie or hen bufflehead. had a surprise visitor this morning though had a snow goose come in. ive never hunted them but thought it was weird to see one here in temple.
