Why do factory 7mm-08 loads cost more than .308 factory loads? I was thinking about buying a 7-08 but this is a draw back for me. Opinions apprieciated.

Supply and demand.

If you don't reload and plan on shooting 60 ~ 200 rounds a year the .308 will be less expensive to shoot.

If you shoot less than 60 the price difference in ammo won't account for much, maybe $15 ~ $25 per year.

Thats so true, Since my wife is the only one that shoots the 7mm 08 I just by a couple of boxes a year. When I get enough brass to reload I will. I do like the round for her since its a 140 gr. with less kick. I do not think she would like shooting my '06 or 300 mag

Production costs, the higher the munber of items manufactured the cheaper the production cost, per item. Like the others have said it depends on how much you shoot as to the cost difference. If you shoot a lot then reloading is far less expensive than factory ammo.

This exactly. I bought my 7mm-08 with the intention of handloading for it exclusively. Since I shoot a lot, it makes sense to load for it myself, and to date have not put a single round of factory ammo through it. It all depends on how much you are going to shoot it.

One thing to remember is that it doesn't take much recoil to kill a paper target. Adjust your loads according to the purpose.

7-08 widely available in cheap rifles, so I suspect there are a bunch of them out there: example: the Stevens 200 at Academy that sold for less than $200 OTD. Probably many were donors for new builds, but still there must be a lot of these out there. Suppose ammo makers have a high margin round by producing a limited supply.
