Ive got a Weatherby in 22/250 that drives tacks. I just sold a 308 Weatherby that was shooting half inch groups or better. And just got a heavy barrel Howa in 308 thats looking like its going to do the same. That being said all I shoot is handloads. Go with the Weatherby and dont look back.

If they would stop putting god awful triggers in the guns these days they would shoot much better.

I've got 3 M700s and all shoot MOA or better. 2 have 1 1/2lb Shilen triggers and one I worked the factory down to about 3lbs. One of them shoots 1/4 MOA cloverleafs with factory loads after a little trip to Shilen.

I wouldn't recommend under 3lbs for most people.

That would be me, for now.

Thanks for the info.

I just don't know if I like the green stock. I looks like barf

Except for the guns Academy sells all of the rest have black stocks. The green stock is an Academy exclusive. Any other dealer will have the same gun in a black stock.

I like the green stocks with the black trim on them. If I don't get a black stock I will probably have a laminate stock made.

Now to look for a scope.

There is a cosmetic upside to composite/plastic stocks (any color) Krylon makes a spray paint called Fusion for plastic. I think Lowes & wallymart carry it.
You can paint whatever color and pattern you want. It's really easy and fun! Hell, it ain't like those plastic stocks are a $500 chunk of presentation grade deep burl walnut or flame birdseye maple!

My "go to" rifles are all accurate-sub MOA.
Yet I agree they are more accurate than I am. But isn't that all the more reason to have them? At any rate,it makes me feel better..

Not sure if your interested in sub MOA or not by your post. If you are, buy a Savage.

I'd like the most accurate rifle for the money. I can't drop 700 for a rifle like I did for my son's Tikka T3. I need under 400 or real close.

It is not only how good the rifle is, it is how good the shooter is. Confidence in their weapon helps most people to shoot better. Practice, knowledge of their weapon and experience in the field gives the hunter confidence. I would rather be with a hunter that has confidence in his weapon than have a hunter show up with a weapon that can drive tacks at 1000 yards that has never fired the rifle. Nothing can ruin a good hunt faster than having a "dollar" expert in camp, they can spend all of the "dollars" they want, but without knowing how to use what they bought they are worthless as the equipment they bought.

You can buy a Remington 700 ADL for $349 at Academy in a variety of calibers.

As the distance lengthens and the horns get bigger, the more accuracy you need...IMO Besides I don't have any confidence in a gun that doesn't shoot where I'm aiming!

Couldn't agree more. Back when I was a kid & helping run my dad's friend's lease, it amazed me how many of his clients would show up with some really high-dollar rifles and end up either missing with a whole magazine full of ammo or shooting a deer all to heck (leg or jaw blown off, gut shot, you get the idea). They would inevitably blame the gun/scope.

Sometimes, I'd be told to re-sight the guns, and in most instances, they'd be right on the money. The owner told me to lie to them & tell them I'd corrected the problem... these were his clients, and he didn't want to make them look bad.

Marlin XL/XS -7 is just about the most accurate production rifle I've seen and it's only $300. Savages model 10's are amazing too.

[quote=redchevy]Look at the targets of most shooters when they leave the rifle range... most of them look like you fired 12 guage buck shot at it. That is what kills most deer.
quote]

Man, that is the truth. I typically shoot by myself or family. I shot for the first time at a public rifle range at the beginning of deer season this year. At 100yards, I was shooting about 2 MOA with a rifle that had been zeroed 10 years ago and not shot much since. I thought I was shooting horribly because I normally shoot much better than that. But the range officer came down to ask what kind of gun I was shooting because my groups looked great. I thought I he was crazy until I used my spotting scope and looked at everyone else on the range....

I'll have to check them out. I am looking for a removable magazine. I liked the Weatherby because it's a 5+1.

Bought a Tikka T3 Hunter in .25-06 before gun season and really like it. Sighted in shot .75 groups with Hornady SST ammo.

I would be more worried about the trigger pull than what it shot locked down for the accuracy test from the factory.

You want accuracy, spend the extra money on glass. Very few modern rifles are not plenty accurate. There are a lot of scopes that will really hurt accuracy down range though.
