Question, would you like to be carried by your cajones? Then don't carry your gun by the scope. JMO?!

Good scope and mounts shouldn't be a problem. I frequently pick mine up the scope. Never once have I encountered any sort of problem by doing it. I will continue to do so without fear of anything going afoul.

A modern aluminum tubed scope is designed to withstand the horizontal force generated by the recoil of the rifle. The scope is not designed for verticle forces. It may not do any damage but it is not designed to carry an eight pound rifle at two small fixed points.

After reading all of this I guess I baby the hell out of my rifle - I don't even like to have it rest flat with the scope touching the truck seat while driving around.
I changed my scope 5 years ago and it has been dead on every since. However, I went to the range in September and it was high about 3 inches and to the right about 2 inches - still don't know what happened since last year.

LOL, I'm the same way. I've never carried a rifle by it's scope but I did once missed a deer at about 50 yards because my scope was off and didn't realize it and a hog, at about the same distance, on another occasion. Now, I'm paranoid about what touches my scope.
As far as carrying a rifle by the scope, I think I would be more concerned about a cheap scope suffering damage than a better built scope.

I been doing it of and on for 30 yrs, same gun same scope with no problems. But dad used to ALWAYS say " That's a scope not a handle." RULE # 1...Dad is always right. RULE # 2...If there is ever any doubt about Dad being right...REFER TO RULE # 1. LOL

With a good scope and mounts, it should be fine. I have picked them up by the scope before. I would be worried more about not having a good grip on the package and dropping the whole thing.
As for the forces on the scope, it's going through MUCH more force with every vibration totaled and every bit of recoil on a hunting rifle than anything you can do with your hands carrying it.
There is a guy on here that will tell you a $49 simmons clam-packed for Wal-Mart is just as durable as a Mark 3 Leupold too, but I don't believe him either.

A friend of my dad's used to borrow it for 1 hunt every year and shoot it twice, one to check the sites and 1 to kill a buck!!!

Why take a chance on messing up the accuracy of your rifle and scope?

I don't use cheap riflescopes nor rings and mounts, so I have no issue carrying any of my rifles by the scope.

On one hand, I wouldn't recommend it. On the other hand, I've done it and had no negative results. Probably the only real danger is if you're carrying it by the scope and bang the gun against something.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

ive been doing it for years. Never once had my rifle zero affected. Ill keep doing it too. Scopes take way more abuse than that when the trigger is pulled and they are thrown in the back of trucks, atvs..etc. Its not a problem in my opinion.

It seems to be an odd way to carry a rifle, but if a scope can't hold up to that "Torture" test, there are some serious issues in the durability of that scope.
Any scope must have the ability to hold up to the jarring recoil and bumps and scrapes that serious hunting rigs will most certainly go through. I would like to know of any scope, ever, that has been harmed by this practice so I never make the mistake of counting on it.
I like to protect my rifles as best I can, but eventually you have to take them out of the bubble wrap & just use them. Sometimes in less than perfect conditions & with less than dainty handling.

Although NTXTRAPPER has quoted some very impressive information from some website that he has read..........
carry away! it won't hurt a thing.
If anything, it will have less effect on the accuracy then carrying a savage with it's cheap plastic stock by the sling!
You can twist one of those cheap stocks by hand.....terrible.
