I qm currently shooting a Rem 700 .243 with the stock barrell, and was thinking of switching to a heavy barrell.. Can anyone give me some pros and cons of doing this and if I decide to do it where I might find someone to do it for me in the DFW area... Thanks......

We do it all the time. Its a normal procedure, message me if you want us to do it. We are located in Richardson. I highly recommend a heavy barrel on a bolt gun. Only con will be a little more weight, but not that much. Heck my buddy lugged around an Accuracy International all day long hunting in Kansas. LOL

Is your rifle not very accurate now ? If your getting good accuracy I would leave it alone. Just because your putting a heavier barrel on an action doesnt always mean your going to get more accuracy...

I agree with Brandon. Why are you wanting to change the barrel?

Its fairly accurate but I was wanting to see if I could make it a little bit closer groups..I can put a group around a quarter @ 100 yrds... Not too bad just want it shooting tacks... But you may be right.. Maybe I should leave it alone...

Maybe there's something you could do to your present barrel to increase accuracy before changing it entirely. Have it re-crowned and see if that helps. You don't want to go thru the expense of changing the barrel if it's not needed.

Bed the stock for one, and if u change stock will have to be inletted for larger contour and if your going to change barrel might is well have action trued, my .02. If it is not bedded then that is the first thing I would do, will never shoot non bedded rifle again, 2nd only to trigger job for improved groups.

If you can keep 5 shot's inside an inch and a half I wouldn't mess with it.

I might would drop a lighter timney trigger in it, but that would be the extent of me messing with it.

Got to agree I would do a trigger job or a match triger before I switched out the barrel. Like said above if you go with a heavier barrel you will need a new stock or inlett the original. Remember just going with a heavier barrel doesnt aleays guarantee better accuracy... up

I have a 700 in 7STW that the groups cut in half by putting it in a Hogue Stock from he original tupperware one. Limbsavers deresonator shrank them further. Went from 1.5 inch groups to 1/2 to 5/8 inch with those 2 changes.

It would be a lot less expensive to buy a heavy barrel gun and sell yours rather that get yours rebarreled.

Are you hunting tacks with it or deer?

A factory rifle that can produce groups you can cover with a quarter is very good, I would put a timney trigger in it, but aside from that don't fart with it.

What bedding agent would you recommend. Is one better than another?
If he was going to change barrels which brand would you suggest? I've used Shilen in the past (Texas company) but is there better out there?

There are several good bedding compounds out there all are pretty much equal. As far as the barrel goes Shilen has been kinda left behind by the other makers rarely will you find one of their barrels on the benchrest cicuit. I prefer Krieger or
Bartlien and have heard nothing but good out of Rockcreek barrels.

shilen, barrels are still one of the best out there , i install hart, krieger, shaw, douglas.they are all about the same in performance.the main gripe i have with shilen is having to wait 3-9 months for a match barrel. mike at shilen says it because of military contracts for the m40 .well almost every maker does some barrel work for the military, but i can still get their match barrels in about a month

Not saying your wrong but I've been told by several people Schneider makes the M40 barrels.
