We had three groups and shot 52 ducks and 2 Canadas between us. My group had a four man limit by 9:30. Pictures and stories to come.

Congrats!

I got to see different model bassboats. Red ones, yellow ones, and all other colors that exists in the rainbow. It was like a boat show.

Recognize you, Dave, and Fowldreams. Who else went, who's who, from left to right in this photo?

Day 2. 51 ducks (22 mallards)

That makes 106 ducks and 2 geese for the THF crew! Good shootin' guys! Already looking forward to next year!

I am sure plenty of stories and pictures will start to surface from this trip.

Did Dave grow a beard for this trip or is that just the makeup he wears?

First Day Report:
Dave, Chris and I drove up together Friday night. This was Chris's first duck hunt so I was pretty excited for him.

Saturday we were set up in layout blinds on a nice sized pond and the ducks were thick before legal shooting time.

At legal our guide, Brian, shouts take'em as a flock gets in range and everyone dropped at least one bird. When Tank, the retriever starts delivering birds Brian asks, "Who shot the one from down there?" Chris answers up it was him and Brian announces you got a banded Gadwall hen! First hunt and Chris has a banded bird.

We get almost done with our limits and a flight of Spoonies comes in. We started laughing and when they were in range I popped up and hollared "SPOONIES". We dropped 3 and I got my first drake hollywood.

We ended up the morning with limits all around, all Gadwalls except for the three Spoonies. We had a few solo greenheads flying around but they did not decoy.

We get back to camp and start taking pictures and everyone is congratulating Chris on his banded bird.

After a while Chris asks, "What does W.A.R.C. stamped on this band mean?" a couple people cracked and I finally let it out that it was Waterloo Amateur Retriever Club and that was a band from our hunt tests. Chris was a good sport about it, getting an easy limit on your first duck hunt deserves some hazing. The funniest part was I told Dave about the prank on Friday and by Saturday morning he had forgotten and thought it was a real band when it was shot. Thanks to Brian for helping execute the plan.

AWESOME Hunt and great memories for shore!!! Always a pleasure hunting with fellow THF-ers and no better way to do it then in North Texas with REDLEG OUTFITTERS. Gotta give a big thanks to them for everything they did, from the hunts, to the food, to the accomodations, these guys could make anyone feel at home!! Saying they're top notch is an understatement. Can't wait till next year. Too many stories to be told, cant wait for em to leak. For the record i had nothing to do with the fake band incident LMAO

Second Day report:

The weather called for 32 and windy. Chris and I signed up to go to a Wood Duck hole. It was a small pond you could throw a rock across with trees all around. There was a small beaver dam holding the water in.

5 minutes to legal and the wood ducks and a few Mallards fell in, we were getting excited listening to the whistle calls up close and in person. At legal we gave Chris the first shot and he got a Drake. A little later he gets a drake and hen pair.

We had 3 birds on the water and I sent Daisy to start working. Her leap over the greenbriar thicket in front of me is something I'll never forget. She brings me the first Drake and I send her again. While she was swimming back another drake Wood Duck flies in, Chris had his limit so it was my turn and I dropped it right behind her. I'm not paying attention and she puts the bird she just retrieved right next to the first one and jumps back in to get mine without a word from me. I now have an official meat dog. smile

Stephen and Chris:

When she gets back with that one I tell her to sit just as a lone Greenhead dropped in on my side and I folded him with one shot. She stayed steady on the shot so maybe she does remember her training rofl I send her to pick up the last two ducks and that wrapped up our hunt on that hole.

We decided to go try another little hole in the middle of the woods that was known to be a Mallard favorite. It did not take us long to limit out. I had a triple picking out three green heads and even got a mallard hybrid out of it.

See this thread if you have an idea of what the other parent was.

Chris and me with our first drake Wood Ducks:

Posing with some birds:

Since we finished up early we went to check on the group with Trey, Dave and Jason. They were hunting layout blinds on a dam.

We sat in the woods and watched them knock down a few birds. I should have video taped it.

I was so happy to take my buddy Chis on his first duck hunt. It could not have worked out better with six bird limits both days. He got to see several species of ducks and hunt layouts and green timber. He had a couple of great shots where he folded the birds on the first shot. I had a double the first day and my first triple on the second day and got my first 6-bird limits. Hunting with Dave is a blast and while I was not in the field with the other guys they are some great hunters and better friends.

We hung out a little more and had some breakfast but then we had to get back to the real world.

Looking forward to next year.

Had a good time on my first hunt, even if that SOB TexasEd put a band on my first bird wink

I thought it was funny that in the middle of the first day hunt, Dave starts cracking up in his blind all by himself. Damn tricksters.

Brian and Steven and the Red Leg team made it a great first duck hunt. Put me on the list for next year!
