Well me and my buddy decided to sleep in Saturday and go try to have an afternoon shoot. Well we left Lubbock about 2:30 and were out at the spot by 3:30. Threw 4 dozen mallard and pintail dekes out and set up in the tree line about 20 yards from the dekes. First group in was a group of about 10 sprig 6 shots later we had our 4 bull sprigs laying belly up. We sat for about 15 more minutes and from about 200 yards out here comes a group of mallards with 3 drakes, they set right in shot is called and 3 drakes hit the water, Gauge makes short work of pickin them up.

Well it slows and for about 30 minutes we only have a few groups barely look, and were starting to wonder if that was it, and start contemplating going to try and shoot pheasant with the time we have left. Just as soon as we were getting ready to stand up we hear that goofy sound a sandhill makes, and this lone sandhill tries to sit in the middle of our decoys, I jump up one shot one crane, Gauge runs out picks it up and as he is running back in there is a group of 5 mallards swinging in over our heads, we pick up shoot and 2 drakes fall out of the group. Just as soon as Gauge got in with the last bird 3 more mallards swing in and 2 more don;t leave.

My day is made, I'm hunting with a good friend, with my 2 year old dog who has retrieved all of our birds, and we now are one shy of a 2 man limit, and quality birds to boot. We're picking decoys up, so we can use the last 45 minutes to walk a brush line, to see if we can jump a couple of the pheasant we regurally see at this property, when a lone greenwing comes in, I grab my gun throw a shell in and drop it, completing our duck limit.

Done with ducks we strip our waders, and make a push with the last thirty minutes of shooting light, within our first 40 yards we jump two hens and a rooster that my buddy takes down with his first shot, a short game of cat and mouse began with Gauge and the rooster, but Gauge won. I'm thinking the day can't get any better when Gauge gets head deep into some CRP directly in front of me and the bush explodes with a big rooster, flying right to left I swing on it and crumple the bird. That was the final shot of what is to be a wingshooting day to beat.

Very nicely done!!!

Best hunt I ever had up there was a three man limit of mallards, kickers, canada's, specks, and sandhill cranes!! All out of the same layout blind.

Still haven't come near that again! up

Thanks for sharin'!

Looks like you made the right call to sleep in. smile
Can't believe you did not get any geese. Are they still in up there?
