The rut is going on right now and still should be some chasing going on when you go.

We've seen a couple of bucks this season with some impressive head gear, just either on the way in before daylight and on the way out with it's flag high in the air. So it shold be good if the weather cooperates.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Thanks for the information!! I killed a 9 point last year with a small body around 110-115. I hear the deer are a little bigger this year.

I was at my lease in Cuero from Nov 11th-14th. I saw several bucks chasing does during that weekend. I'll be out there this weekend so I'll give you a more up to date report when I return.

I've been seeing a lot of deer movement (averaging 7-10 deer per sitting), but I feel that once it gets cold and stays cold for about a week or so generally the deer start moving a lot more and the big bucks start to appear.

Most of our bucks have been averaging 145-150lbs. Not the biggest deer in the state but very healthy

Just got back in from this weekend. Hunting was rather slow compared to normal, but not too bad.

Saturday morning: 1 small 4 point, 2 doe

Saturday evening: 1 buck (came out at 5:50pm) wasn't too big and couldn't tell how many points as it was too dark to tell

Sunday Morning: 2 bucks (non legal 8 and 4 point) 2 doe

Sunday evening: 3 doe

I didn't pull the trigger on any although a couple of the doe were big enough to shoot. The cold front really got them moving. With these next few fronts that are going to move through the deer are really going to be moving. It was really HOT on Sat. walking to the blind it was 82 degrees(not normal for December), so I think it slowed down the deer movement during the day. I'll be out there again next weekend to see what I can get. Good luck

We went to check the game cams and change batteries and we had more mature bucks visting the feeders than does, during the last two weeks;according to the cameras.

During this period(11/19-12/5),most of the feeder activity was at night. But,a few more deer started to visit the feeders more often it seems between 3 and 6pm,since the moon has started to darken.

I hunt on the DeWitt and Lavaca county line. Just barely on the Lavaca side. If it wasn't for a game camera I would think no legal deer are around. My sister emailed me pics of a nice 8 that was at the feeder from 3:00 AM until about 6:30 AM this morning.
Guess where I'll be in the morning? rifle deer2

If you keep your hair short and your mouth shut, things tend to run a lot smoother.

Sorry I missed this as you are already out on your hunt. I'm a landowner in South Central DeWitt County and very involved in whitetail deer management across the county. Here are the breeding dates for the county based on fetus measurements taken from a decade of samples.

About 10% of the does are bred in the 1st and 3rd cycles with 80% in the 2nd. It is odd to find a fetus measurement that is off these days so this is good info for any year. Environmental factors determine whether hunters will observer it or not. This year was not a good year because of the vegetation, acorns, and heat.

I'm also involved in the management of one of the County's deer contests. In the past decade, the limit of my memory, I do not think that we have had a place holder killed after Thanksgiving. That tells me a lot of about mature buck behavior.

I hunt or I'm involved with getting hunter out, cleaning game, etc. almost every day of the season. I have missed five days since the start of the regular season. This has been a tough year for the hunter in my part of Texas. In the last two days, I've personally observed mature bucks moving past fed pens scent checking for hot does. Soon, these deer will have gone "deep" for the year in classic post-rut behavior.

These two 6 1/2 year old 8 pointers where shot within a minute of each other, on opposite ends of my ranch, on the morning of Nov 13. They both were tending a scrape line they had opened a couple of days prior.

That particular weekend was a very good weekend. Everything came together and we saw a great number of bucks. These old boys were as fat as I've ever seen a deer. It was a great year for food!

Where did you you get your reference chart from? I would like to see what it says for Frio County.

I didn't get the chart from anywhere. This is data I collected from every doe killed on my ranch and anybody can do. In fact, if you are consistently hunting a place, you should be checking the uterus of each doe you kill and measuring the fetus. A scale is extremely cheap. This will give you first hand data specific to your place.

Fetus scale

I hold youth antlerless hunts on my ranch each year and we teach each young hunter how to do this.
