I am heading to the Chaparral WMA this Sunday 12/5 to hunt and wondered what was the current state of the rut?

I would like to know so that I can come up with the most effective game plan.

Thanks,

Jason

I hunt south of there by about 80 or so miles. The rut is still out a bit. Bucks still bunched up and showing no interest in does. Although the bucks are starting to move a bit more than previously. I watched one buck thrash some brush, make a scrape and pee on it. Watched two other very young (2.5yo) bucks in a shoving match with their antlers.

Things should really start to get interesting in the next two weeks.

starting to see a little bit of indication with a doe or two.... not much though. bucks are still traveling in groups for the most part, but I did have three bucks staying tight to a single doe for a couple hours on saturday evening.

Actually, I am going on Sunday to hunt the whole next week. The WMA will be closed to all other hunting during this special draw hunt, they usually are.

And it is Chaparral.

What a great draw...I've hunted there for about 10 years (quail) but never been fortunate to deer hunt there. Nice thing is they won't stack you up and there's a full 15K acres in LaSalle/Dimmit Counties. Good luck!!!!

You obviously don't know this is a DRAW ONLY unit for deer and the best one in the state. No quail, dove, blah, blah hunting allowed during any deer hunts.

Yeah, you're probably a week early. I'd still rattle though, you should definitely get some interest.

From his other posts I've seen I don't think he's familiar with anything except tapping a keyboard.

I have quail hunted there before and its a great looking ranch. I have some relatives that have been drawn for hunts and got some nice horns off of there. You wont be ran over like the other post said, go and have fun rattle some it should be about that time.

ALSO remember no loaded guns in camp and obey their rules. You will have a good hunt.
