I requested a price quote from them via e-mail, and a reply was quickly sent.
What I specified: Left Hand Short Action .308 caliber 4140 Chrome Moly Steel #3 Contour 26" barrel 11 degree crown Bead blasted Matte blue finish Helical Flute (explanation below) Injection Molded Stock
The main reason I am considering a custom rifle from them is that I can't find what I want in a left hand bolt action. They use a Savage 10 or 110 action with Accutrigger of course. The barrel is free floated, the action is pillar bedded on the synthetic stock. The helical flute is supposedly their own design and is patent pending. They claim it increases barrel harmonics by 30%. It seems that it will only need optics mounted and it's ready to go after a barrel break-in.
Price Quoted: $815.00 + $30.00 shipping to an FFL Turn around time is 8 to 10 months.
Anybody ordered one or know someone who has? Does anybody see anything that I should consider changing?

Unless you are simply wanting a rifle that you can say is a custom, buy a straight Savage for a lot less money. ER Shaw will not give you any sort of accuracy standard. The new Savages with the accu-trigger and now the accu-stock will probably out shoot the Shaw gun. Too much money-too long of a wait and pay it all up front---NO THANKS

I don't disagree with you. I just can't find a Savage that fit's the bill in a lefty.

I'm of the other opinion... Think it's a great way to go, especially if you're a lefty and have limited choices on the gun market. That's a great price for a gun that's loaded with custom features. You'd spend 2 to 3 times that much on a similar set up from Jarrett, and the gun wouldn't be much more accurate. I'm looking at ordering one similar in 22-250 for yotes and goats. David Petzel is a big ER Shaw fan, and he could shoot any custom gun he wanted... at no cost.
BUT... like you I'd feel better if some guy's on the forum that have dealt with ER Shaw would share their experience.

I'm a lefty and sadly it usually takes me 12-18 months to find what I want in stock somewhere in a left hand action.
I've seriously considered an ER Shaw and would spec new rifle very close to what you have there, but I'd go with a wood stock and try to get the target action that adjusts down to 1.5lbs like on the FP10..
Another thing to consider in an ER Shaw over a stock Savage in 308win, is that Savage does a 1 in 10 twist on their 308s. While this is great for 175gr SMKs and 180gr ballistic hunting bullets, folks (including myself) have had problems getting acceptable accuracy out of 150s and only marginal accuracy out of 165s without putting a stiffer stock than the Savage laminate on the rifle. You could spec an ER Shaw with a 1 in 12 twist.

I thought I typed something wrong. Let's try that again.

I doubt that anyone's synthetic stock is any stiffer than the new Savage Accu-stock with the molded in alum. rail and bedding mechanism.

An accu-stock would be nice.
After a fairly extensive search, my new rifle came with an regular synthetic stock. I didn't find a left handed accu-stock version during my recent search except for a spankin' new FP10 in 308.
I'd ask ER Shaw to be sure which version of synthetic stock would be supplied, because the left handed version appears to be sparse at the moment.

I've looked all over the place today to find a .308 in left hand. I will take a Rem 700 or a Savage. I WILL have to compromise something! There is anything you want readily available if you're right handed, but left handed shooters are still treated like red-headed step children.
I will accept a standard barrel, but all I can find available is 22". I think 24"-26" would be better. This will be a walking around gun, so I don't necessarily need a heavy barrel. I was going to order a heavy fluted barrel from ER Shaw simply for getting a little stiffer barrel that has had the weight cut down. I don't want a fluted barrel because it looks cool. I want a fluted barrel to get a heavy barrel a little closer to the weight of a standard barrel.
I don't know which stock Shaw uses, I will find out before placing an order. I believe in Savage rifles out of the box! I have a Savage 12 FP in .22-250 with no mods and love it, it is a tack driver! I would much prefer to have Savage's new Accustock over a year old rifle that doesn't have it.
So I either compromise, keep looking, or order a custom and wait 10 months.

Thread dredge!
I put in an order for an ERShaw in 25-06 on Feb 18, 2010. I talked to them this week and shipping is scheduled for sometime in March, hopefully. They told me 8-10 months and it's looking more like 13-14 months. It's pretty dang frustrating to wait this long.

ERShaw I have only heard good things about with the exception of delivery dates.
Tikka is now making left handed T3's. While not a custom rifle, they do come with accuracy of sub MOA guarantee and some of the smoothest actions available.

I've never read a bad thing about their guns but delivery seems to take an extra 50% of whatever was quoted. I hope it's worth it in the end.

prior planning and getting what you want. having standards of ones self is worth it. Iam all for getting more bang for the buck. order and wait you probably have somthing else to take to the range anyway.

My brother in law had them make him a barrel for his wife's gun. They said 3-4 months and delivered over a year later. Super nice barrel, just took forever. They blamed it on the helical fluting.

Wal-Mart used to have a HUGE book of guns for order. If they still do they could order whatever you want in lefty and probably have it in under a week. Or try your local gun-shop. There might be a "premium" for not buying out of their stock on-hand, but I bet they could get you whatever you want in a factory gun.

I havn't bought a Mark VII yet. I have used Shaw before to build two rifles. Both were so beautiful that I could not sell them. One in 308 on a Mauser 98 action with double triggers. and one in 280 Rem. on a P-17 receiver. Both shoot fantastically and are Surpurbly worked. You'll notice I said yet above. I plan to in the future.

savage will make you a custom gun to order. just call them, and it's not all that expensive. both my sons are lefty's and they shoot tikka's. If I was going to do a custom order, I would use savage on the cheap end or Cooper. Cooper makes lefty anything, just costs $1800

retiredgunner, and FireGator. Look at the date of my original post.
I ended up buying a Savage model 10 in .308 and now have a Mcmillan on order for it.
