I recently bought a couple of square bales of Alfafa in anticipation to entice the deer from the acrons. The bales are cheaper and go further then a bag of Green Rage.

Does anyone has any success or failure stories they would like to share using Alfafa hay?

This morning I broke one the bales into three blocks and placed them next to three different corn feeders.

It concentrates the deer nicely.

I have also put out several bales at different spots but it layed there the entire season and rotted. The deer would pass right by without a glance and head to the feeder.

I put a bale out, but left the baling twine on it so they wouldn't tear it apart. It looked like they nibbled on it but didn't spent too much time at it. So I took the twine off and broke it into smaller blocks. The deer and Aoudad didn't seem too interested but the cows loved it. Let us know how it works out for ya.

I put out a bale in September. I have pics of them eating it at night. 80% of bale is still there. I don't have 1 pic of does eating just young bucks. I don't know of it's a draw but it was cheap enough to try.

It's kind of like trying to get deer to eat protein pellets.

It takes them a while to figure it out and once they start to eat it they will tear it up in a day or two.

I hunted on a place that was about 27,000 acres and the lower part the deer were used to eating it and you couldn't put a bail out and have it last but just for a few days. On the upper end of the ranch you put it out and it would rot.

It does work better if there isn't acorns or a lot of other forbs for the deer to eat as they will much rather have the good stuff.

I'm thinking to trying a bail where I'm hunting and see what happens there since I haven't used it on that place before, but it helps if the deer don't have a lot of food choices.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Will draw them pretty good late season when nothing else is green but mature bucks still only hit it well after dark.

Alfalfa is an excellent attactant especially for exotic deer like Chital aka Axis and Sika. It is what most game ranchers feed sick animals too, and it's good for arthritis and is the only thing that contains Vitamin K. It's like catnip to deer, but works better on the exotic species than the whitetail but still works to feed especially after everything green dies off with cold temps. They like the green stuff more then.

Also, you can buy bags of what's called CHAFFEHAYE. It's siloed Alfalfa, and they add Molasses to it and I've been using this. Works well but to get them introduced, I added corn to it for the first few weeks being it isn't a native food source around here.

works for me but it does depend on the quality of hay you have

I tried some several seasons ago while hunting out of George West. The deer never touched it.

I tried it and it rotted the first year. I think thru conditioning you can make it a food source in hard times. I'm going to try molasses and corn mixed with it in Jan. If you don't have any alfalfa fields nearby they may not have been exposed; and if you do they might prefer the fresh stuff out of the fields. Catch 22.
But it's cheap enough to implement consistently for years until the conditioning is achieved.

They tear it up on our place. Feed it all year long.

You have never hunted near a feeder, much less used alfafa
