Last week I was able to take my girlfriend and her nephew on their first deer hunt. I was going to see if all the trips to the range had paid off for them. I had set up a doe/spike hunt with Michael Mitchell of Insight Hunting and could not wait to see what the morning would bring. Running on only a few hours of sleep and cinnamon rolls, we met up with Michael at the local truck stop for a run down on how the deer were reacting to the weather. When we met Michael we knew we were going to have a great hunt, he had a positive attitude and couldnt wait to get us in the blind. The morning hunt was awesome, we saw game which included blackbuck and massive whitetail bucks. The way we were seated, my gf's nephew was to take the first shot. As I loaded the .243 for him a large spike stepped out on my gf's side so we decided she would take the shot. She readied herself and after what seemed like forever the spike buck stepped out from in front of a large 8 point. But as he did he kept circling and did not allow for a good shot. This happened for a couple of minutes until he made the mistake of stopping broadside at 60 yds. I just said "put it right in his arm-pit" then i hear the "Bang!" break the the morning silence. As i watched through my binos I saw she had made an awesome shot, blood had squirted out with the first jump. Sure enough 10-15yds into the bush there he laid, and then the "im so excited" singing began. As we walked up to the buck Michael says "Thats the best shot ive ever seen" well, thats because her nephew hadnt shot yet.

After the pictures the spike was gutted and placed in the back of my pickup. We were then placed back in the blind but there was not movement so we decided to try spot and stalk with no luck so back to the blind we went, once agian the deer were no where in sight so we decided to take a lunch break. After lunch when we headed back to the blind the deer were already starting to filter towards the feeder. after sitting for a few minutes the young deer began to appear and within 30mins we had deer all around us, by this time my gf's nephew is shaking like a leaf. Many of the deer we saw were large mature bucks and a couple of axis bucks but soon followed the does. As we sat in the blind something spooked the deer and we thought our chances were gone but we still had 30-20 minutes of shooting light left so we sat and waited. Sure enough the does came back in and as soon as i spotted a mature doe I said "thats the doe were taking" my gf's nephew began asking "which one, which one". While I sat and waited the funniest thing happened, we said "take a deep breath"..and he did..but he never exhaled, haha. I told em "did u forget how to breathe, get ready and put the crosshairs on the doe".As I watch the doe I told him the same thing "put it in her arm-pit, as soon as she clears that feeder pipe u send it". The words had just left my mouth when i hear the crack of the .243. Sure enough that small round found its home right in her arm-pit. My gf screamed so loud our guide knew she didnt go far. He had dropped her in her tracks with a heart shot. You may not be able to tell by the expression on is face but he didnt stop talking the entire ride home.

Overall the hunting experience was great, we couldnt have asked for better weather or a better guide. I appreciate what micheal did for me in getting my girlfreiend and her nephew on their game. I hope to come back and get a hunt in myself or i may just sit back and shoot with a camera and let someone else in the family do the hunting. Either way we had a great time!

I was going to hunt if we had time but im glad I got to spend it with my family. The entire ride home all I heard was how much fun they had had and they couldnt wait to go hunting again. I think theyre hooked now.

This is our little boy, all he talks about is hunting and hes never been but he sure does get excited when we watch the outdoor channel together. You gotta start em young. Its a bit grapic but I enjoy it.

Good shooting , you can't start them too young , more than likely that will be something they will teach their young someday .

I hope so, the hunt was to get my gf on a doe and get her nephew away from his xbox. We went 2 for 2 so we're all smiles

Good shooters are born at the range, and not in the field.

Excellent story. Thanks for sharing.

Amen to that, I had to break her nephews habit of "jerking" the rifle when squeezing the trigger. after sneaking in an empty shell every once in a while he finally learned to relax a bit, he also realized he wouldnt shoot any deer with his muzzle pointing to the sky.

Great story. Congrats. Where were yall at to have seen Axis? I went out for Axis earlier this year in Kerr County and came back with Whitetail. I agree. Start em young. My oldest still has 3-4 years before I'll let her take a shot, but both my kids love helping me clean the animals. My lil boy especially loves cleaning dove.
